No big-budget Tamil films releasing this festive season

Tamil films have a huge market worldwide, thanks to the star value of actors. Pongal and Diwali are the two major festive seasons when most Tamil projects, especially big-budget films, hit the marquee.

In Tamil Nadu, 28 March to 15 April is the biggest festival season as Easter, Eid, Vishu, and Tamizh Puthandu are celebrated.

However, interestingly, no star films have been announced in Tamil for this festive season.

Vikram’s Thangalaan and Dhanush’s Raayan, slated for release on 14 April, have been postponed.

According to the entertainment analyst Sreedhar Pillai, the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu, scheduled for 19 April, are the reason for the change in the release date of Thangalaan and Raayan.

Meanwhile, Vijay Antony’s Romeo and Sundar C’s Aranmanai 4 are all set to release in cinema halls for Tamizh Puthandu.

Big-budget Tamil films

Captain Miller, Ayalaan, Mission: Chapter 1, and Merry Christmas were some of the movies that were released during Pongal. Among these, Captain Miller and Ayalaan became successful.

Films like Joshua Imai Pol Kaakha, Por, Vadakkupatti Ramasamy, and Bluestar got a good response, but couldn’t maintain the momentum at the box office.

Big-budget Tamil films like Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam and Jayam Ravi’s Siren couldn’t become super hits.

After Pongal, most of the theatres in Tamil Nadu were screening re-releases as there weren’t any big-budget Tamil films that could attract audiences.

Most cinema halls, mainly single-screen theatres, cancelled morning shows and were showing evening shows to cut down electricity charges and other recurring expenditures!

Meanwhile, many big-budget Tamil films are in the shooting and post-production stages.

Suriya’s Kanguva, Vijay’s Greatest of All Times (GOAT), Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, Dhanush’s Raayan, and Vikram’s Thangalaan are some of the most-awaited “star” films of this year.

Other language movies

The theatres in Tamil Nadu witnessed good business with the success of the Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys.

Directed by Chidambaram, the flick collected around ₹60 crore at the Tamil box office — a record for any Malayalam movie.

Another Malayalam film, Premalu, also has a good audience in Tamil Nadu. A Tamil dubbed version was released on 15 March.

The Malayalam flick Anchakkallakokkan, which was released last Friday in Tamil Nadu, evoked a good response from the audience.

Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) is another anticipated project which will be released in Tamil dubbed version. Prithviraj Sukumaran, who plays the lead role in the movie, dubbed his lines in four different languages.

The Hollywood movie Godzilla X Kong The New Empire was released on 22 March.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, featuring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Varshangalkku Shesham, Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham, and Unni Mukundan’s Jai Ganesh will also have a grand worldwide release on 11 April.
