3.5/5

Director Girish AD is back with his new movie Premalu. And it seems like he is going to hit a hat-trick.

His previous films, Thaneer Mathan Dinangal (2019) and Super Sharanya (2022), were superhits.

Interestingly, all three are youth-oriented ventures.

Thaneer Mathan Dinangal was a love story set in a school, and Super Sharanya was a romantic comedy based in college.

Synopsis

Premalu, a Malayalam movie with a quirky Telugu title, narrates the love story of Sachin (Naslen K Gafoor) and Reenu (Mamitha Baiju), who live in Hyderabad.

Reenu works in an IT company, while Sachin works in a food joint. He aims to settle in the UK.

Sachin meets Reenu at a wedding, and he falls in love with her at first sight.

They become friends through funny incidents, most of which make the audience burst into laughter.

Their family backgrounds are different, but these barriers are presented in a lighter way in the story.

Based  on familiar lines

Aadhi (Shyam Mohan) is the team lead of Reenu, and his character is similar to that of most men in Girish’s films. He is both irritating and captivating.

For example, in Thaneer Mathan Dinangal, Ravi Padmanabhan (Vineeth Sreenivasan) has an issue with the protagonist. In Super Sharanya, Ajith Menon (Vineeth Vasudevan) is a spoof of toxic men.

Similarly, in Premalu, Aadi is slightly eccentric and overprotective about Reenu. The scenes involving Reenu, Sachin, and Aadhi are hilarious.

Amal Davis (Sangeeth Pratap), a friend of Sachin, prepares for the GATE  and aims to get admission to IIT-Roorkee where his girlfriend studies.

Karthika (Akhila Bhargavan) is Reenu’s colleague.

They both play crucial roles in the film as supporting cast.

Will Sachin be able to earn the love of Reenu? This is what Premalu is all about.

The takeaways

Girish AD’s expertise in making romantic comedies has helped Premalu.

Having been well-versed with the pulse of college students and family audiences, the director incorporates the quintessential elements that would cater to them.

Interestingly, not all films from the same genre did well at the Malayalam box office.

Choosing Hyderabad over Chennai and Bengaluru, which most Malayalam movies are set against these days, is again a smart choice.

The city of Hyderabad, which is familiar to the Malayali audience only through Telugu films, plays a character in itself in the plot.

Reference to the “Secret Chamber”, introduced in the superhit movie Hridayam (2022), in a quirky way is one of the takeaways of Premalu.

The film talks about young students leaving for European nations for higher studies.

Girish brings out the best from the combo of Sachin and Amal Davis.

Hilarious scenes and situational comedies are another major highlight.

Crafting a romantic comedy without lags or dull moments is a difficult task. But Girish and Kiran Josey’s script pulls it off.

Vishnu Vijay’s music elevates the mood. The musician has been noticed for his compositions in Thallumala (2022), Sulaikha Manzil (2023), and Falimy (2023).

The “Telangana Bommalu” song is one of the peppy songs sung by senior singer KG Markos. The soundtrack is trending on the chartbusters.

Naslen and Mamitha Baiju are in top form in the flick.

Their combination and ability to deliver comedy scenes complement the script.

Mamitha Baiju is proving herself to be a versatile actor. This is her first film as a female lead.

Her roles in Pranaya Vilasam (2023) and Super Sharanya were noted earlier.

Naslen, as Sachin, delivers a fine performance. The young actor has proven his mettle in films like Makal (2020), Thaneer Mathan Dinangal (2019), and Neymar (2023).

Sangeeth Pratap, as Amal Davis, scores big in the flick as he has equal screentime as Sachin. The actor is at his best in the comedy sequences.

Shyam Mohan, as Aadhi, is a revelation. As a person who often gets irritated by petty issues related to his love interest, the actor is a visual treat.

His face-off scenes with Nelson are some of the highlights of the movie.

Akhila Bhargavan, as Karthika, get a meaty role in the film. Her scenes are written well.

Meenakshi Raveendran and Althaf Salim are good, too.

Final take

Premalu is an out-and-out entertainer with Girish AD’s touch. The movie boasts a scintillating chemistry between Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, who steal your hearts.
