Shruti Haasan Monster Machine

Actress Shruti Haasan, who has just released her single “Monster Machine“, says that the song — which urges Indian women to embrace the monster within them — is a dark feminine cry of self-love.

“I came up with this song on the piano, which is how I write all my songs from scratch. This is something which I strongly experienced internally. Then, I found a way to articulate it,” Shruti Haasan told South First about her feminist number.

‘Relationships — my driving force’

The songwriter says relationships have been the greatest driving force in her life.

“A lot of lessons I have learnt are through relationships. Although success and failure are great teachers, I feel a partner is the most intimate teacher. You learn a lot of stuff through relationships. So, I like using relationships as a narrative,” she said

Monster Machine” uses words intertwined with industrial rhythm and Indian rhythm, all wrapped within a cinematic style score that lends itself to the story.

The actor-singer throws light on how she arrived at “Monster Machine“: “I love using a love song format, but this is a love song for myself. It says I am a monster. I need a monster to meet me, not a man.”

She added, “So, that’s how the idea was born. Then, I started writing these lyrics about addressing the sisterhood of feminism.”

An angry female narrator

About the making of the video, Shruti Haasan said she envisioned an angry female narrator telling the whole thing.

“I wanted to address the witch archetype. Generations change, the punishment changes, but the fire always burns the misunderstood woman. I read this beautiful quote: ‘We are the granddaughters of the witches that you couldn’t burn.’ I feel of the lineage because witches — chudail — are all names given to women you don’t agree with. So, I wanted to play into the archetype,” she explained.

Excited about The Eye

Writing and singing songs and shooting videos are just one facet of Shruti Haasan, whose next project is an international film called The Eye, which is now doing the rounds in festival circuits.

Predictably, this one, too, is all about women. “The Eye is an international film. It has been completed and is currently on festival circuits.”

Shruti Haasan added, “It was nice working on this film because it was a team full of women for the first time in my career. It wasn’t because of novelty. There was a genuine bond of sisterhood between these women, and they got me to play the woman whose story it is. It is honest and authentic. It was so humbling to be on that project.”

Her actor-father Kamal Haasan is the host of the popular Tamil television reality show Bigg Boss.

Ask her if she watches the show and what her thoughts are about it,  Shruti shoots back: ” I don’t watch Bigg Boss. It’s not that I have anything against Bigg Boss. I don’t watch reality-based stuff. I enjoy fiction. If it is reality-based, it has to be a documentary for me.”

However, the actress said she was happy that her father was hosting the show as it seemed to have made a whole generation of people feel closer to him.

“I think people like it because my dad, by nature, is not judgemental. He’ll give you his opinion. He comes at it with humour and compassion. He’ll never say you are a bad person or an idiot. He likes studying people. That is why he is such a good actor,” she signed off.
