All is not well with Sandalwood, its calming and therapeutic fragrance being lost in the putrescine odour of mudslinging.

The latest is over a word of assurance given years ago to act in a movie and the demand for evidence of such a promise. It all began with a Kannada movie producer, MN Kumar, accusing actor Kiccha Sudeep of not keeping his word, given nine years ago, to act in a movie.

Kumar claimed that the actor had taken money for acting in the movie, and later avoided him completely, leading to a financial loss. Kiccha responded with a ₹10-crore defamation suit against the producer. He also sought an unconditional apology.

The producer wants to settle the issue amicably within Sandalwood, and the issue reached seniors like Dr Shiva Rajkumar and Dr V Ravidhandran. The intervention of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), the premier body of the Kannada film industry, further miffed Kiccha.

Kumar and a few fellow producers staged a sit-in in front of the KFCC office, seeking its intervention. However, the KFCC’s intervention did not go down well with the actor.

Meanwhile, Rehman, producer of Huchcha, too, came out against Kiccha. He claimed that he suffered losses by buying the rights of other language films, believing the actor’s promise. He requested the actor to find a remedy for his loss.

Kumar said he went public after Kiccha avoided him. The actor viewed it as an affront to his reputation and took the legal route, saying he would abide by the court’s verdict.

Even as Kiccha remained adamant, a few other producers said the film industry has been functioning on oral assurances and not on any legally bound agreements. They requested the actor to withdraw the case and settle the matter like a family. Kiccha, however, hasn’t relented.
