In lockstep with leaders across the country, the chief ministers of all five states in South India also paid rich tributes to Gandhi.

Gandhi Jayanti : Political Leaders pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary

On the occasion of the 153 birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, leaders across the country paid tributes and offered their prayers.

In lockstep with leaders across the country, the chief ministers of all five states in South India also paid rich tributes to Gandhi.

Tributes also came from influential political leaders from South India.

Political parties from the region also got into the act.

Tributes at the national level

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi.

Paying respects, he tweeted, “This Gandhi Jayanti is even more special because India is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. May we always live up to Bapu’s ideals. [sic]”.

He also urged the citizens to purchase Khadi and handicraft products as a tribute to Gandhi.

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar also visited Rajghat in the capital city to pay tribute to Gandhi on Sunday.

Murmu also took to Twitter and paid homage to the Father of the Nation on behalf of fellow citizens.

Her statement read, “Gandhiji showed to all humanity its true potential, and proved the power of compassion. Lets us again take the pledge to walk on his path, the path of trust and non-violence, to promote mutual goodwill and to work towards the progress of the nation and the world. [sic]”

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge visited Rajghat to pay their respects to Gandhi, along with other party leaders.

Meanwhile, on his third day in Karnataka for the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi attended an event at Badanavalu in Mysuru to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

He offered a floral tribute to the Gandhi statue at Khadi Gramodyog at Badanavalu, and also attended a prayer meeting. He also visited Khadi Village Industries at Badnavalu in memory of the leader.

Tributes from South India

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao paid tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on MG Road in Secunderabad.

He also unveiled a statute of Mahatama Gandhi at Gandhi Dawakhana in Secunderabad.

Many MLAs and MLCs, including ministers T Harish Rao, V Srinivas Goud, and Talasani Srinivas Yadav participated in the event.

Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant-Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan commemorated the International Day of Non-violence and paid floral tributes to Gandhi in Puducherry.

Karanataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai paid respects to Mahatama Gandhi at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi and Chief Minister MK Stalin paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the premises of the Government Museum, in Chennai.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took to Twitter to remember the father of the nation.

He also paid tributes to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was also born on 2 October.

Congress presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor visited Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram Sevagram in Wardha in Maharashtra.

He joined the locals in singing Gandhi’s favourite bhajans and took to Twitter to share his experience of visiting the ashram.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took to Twitter to pay his tributes to Gandhi.

He said the nation should “uphold his secular and democratic ideals”.
