Who is Suchana Seth, the Bengaluru firm CEO accused of murdering son in Goa?

The murder of a four-year-old boy allegedly by his mother — 39-year-old Bengaluru-based AI-startup CEO Suchana Seth — has sent shockwaves around the country.

The police have said Seth killed her son in Goa and was transporting his body in a car when she was apprehended in the Chitradurga district in Karnataka.

She raised suspicion after effecting an early checkout at her hotel in Goa, and the hospitality staff the next morning found what the police determined were bloodstains in her room.

On the investigation, North Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) Nidhin Valsan told South First: “The husband of the accused is yet to arrive in Goa. He is on the way. We have brought her to Goa from Karnataka. The probe is underway.”

Who is Suchana Seth?

Now accused of murdering her child, Suchana’s profile on LinkedIn, describes her as an entrepreneur, AI specialist recognised for her achievements. Her profile boasts of affiliations with Ivy League institutions like Harvard.

Initial police investigation points to her strained relationship with her estranged husband as possible trigger for the crime.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Suchana Seth did her schooling at the DAV Girls Senior Secondary School in Chennai. She graduated in physics from the Bhawanipur Education Society College of Kolkata and is a postgraduate in Sanskrit and Physics from the Ramakrishna Misson Institute of Culture and the University of Calcutta, respectively.

Her profile suggests that she began her career as a research fellow at the Raman Research Institute, where she worked for three years from 2008.

She then worked as a freelance editor for a year and senior analyst in Bengaluru’s Geschickten Biosciences for five months in 2012.

She also served for over two years as a senior analytics consultant at the Data Sciences Group in Innovation Labs in Bengaluru from November 2012.

Then she worked as a senior data scientist for Boomerang Commerce for over a year in Bengaluru from 2014.

Seth then founded the startup The Mindful AI Lab, which is located in Bengaluru, in 2020.

She claims to have expertise in mentoring data science teams and scaling machine learning solutions in both startup environments and industry research labs.

Among ‘100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics’

Seth was recognised as one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics in 2021. The list was published by the Women in AI Ethics, a global initiative looking to increase the recognition, representation, and empowerment of women in AI ethics.

IBM describes AI ethics as “a multidisciplinary field that studies how to optimise AI’s beneficial impact while reducing risks and adverse outcomes”.

She also served as a Mozilla Fellow at Data & Society in 2016-17, a position offered by the Mozilla Foundation. The foundation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Corporation, which is behind the Firefox browser and Thunderbird mail client.

She has also been a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Centre at Harvard University between 2017 and 2019.

Seth has advised research on IoT ethics, mentored data-for-good projects with DataKind, and led data science workshops with organisations like Women Who Code.

She is also the recipient of the National Talent Search Scholarship issued by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
