The 39-year-old chief executive officer (CEO) of a Bengaluru-based startup company allegedly killed her four-year-old son in Goa. The accused, identified as Suchana Seth, then travelled with the child’s body to neighbouring Karnataka, a police official said on Tuesday, 9 January.

Alerted by Goa’s Calangute Police, Karnataka police detained Seth at Aimangala in the Chitradurga district on Tuesday afternoon.

North Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) Nidhin Valsan said: “The investigation is in its initial stage, and efforts are underway to ascertain the motive.”

He added: “Preliminary information suggests a strained relationship with her husband, who is currently out of the country, was the motive. She was waiting for a divorce, which is said to be in the final stage: A court order is awaited.”

The child’s body is currently in the mortuary in Hiriyur in the Chitradurga district. The police are awaiting the arrival and involvement of the boy’s father, Venkatraman, the officer added.

Seth married Venkataraman in 2010. The boy was born in 2019.

“The husband has been informed and asked to come to India. We will be able to elicit more information after interrogating him. The investigation team is bringing her to Goa,” said the SP.

“We have requested for the autopsy there (Chitradurga) itself. We will be able to get more details once the autopsy report is out,” added Valsan.

He added later in the day that Seth had been produced in court, which sent her to judicial remand for six days.

Stay in Goa

According to the police, on 6 January, Suchana Seth and her four-year-old son checked into a service apartment in Candolim’s Hotel Sol Banyan Grande, booking via Airbnb. On the intervening night of 7 and 8 January, the woman demanded an immediate checkout, insisting on a taxi to Bengaluru.

Although the staff insisting that taking the flight was a cheaper option, Seth insisted on a taxi, which was arranged by the hotel staff, the police said.

“The morning after her checkout, hotel staff found red stains in the room. They immediately informed the Calangute Police. Police Inspector Paresh and his team arrived and determined that these were bloodstains,” SP Valson said.

The staff also said that the woman’s four-year-old son was not seen with her when she left, and that she was also carrying an unusually heavy bag, recounted the SP.

He said, “We contacted the woman through the taxi driver’s number provided by the hotel. When asked about her son, she claimed that she had left her son at her friend’s place in Madgaon. The accused told us that the stains were her menstrual blood.”

Valsan continued, “Upon further investigation, the provided address turned out to be fake. PI Paresh then spoke to the taxi driver without the woman’s knowledge.”

The driver was instructed to take her to the Aimangala Police Station, which was the nearest. “Subsequently, the mortal remains of the 4-year-old child were found in her luggage,” said the North Goa SP.

FIR filed

“An FIR was filed on charges of murder under IPC Section 302, along with charges under Sections 201 and 8 of the Goa Children’s Act.”

He added, “The accused, identified as Suchana Seth from Bengaluru, claimed to be settled there during initial interrogation. She is reportedly the CEO of an AI company, a detail requiring further verification.”

The accused was returning in a hired car from Goa, where she had stayed at a rented apartment for two days along with her son.

The Aimangala Police Station’s inspector told South First: “The Goa Police had given intimation about a 39-year-old woman — a murder-accused — travelling with the mortal remains in a taxi to Bengaluru. They had also managed to establish communication with the taxi driver.”

“As per the instructions given to the taxi driver, he came to the police station with the accused. We detained her and handed her over to the Goa Police. They will carry out further investigation. The mortal remains were in the car,” added the inspector.

A team of the Calangute police rushed to Chitradurga and obtained a transit remand of the accused, who was then taken to Goa.
