Thiruchitrambalam review: Dhanush and Nithya Menen shine in this heartwarming film

Thiruchitrambalam doesn’t have high-octane action sequences or unrealistic romances; it is driven purely by the characters and the situations they find themselves in.

Dhanush and director Mithran J Jawahar come together for the fourth time with Thiruchitrambalam, which is also written by the director.

This slice-of-life film revolves around a middle-class guy named Thiruchitrambalam, or Pazham (fruit), as he is known. With this, the director has given us a feel-good movie that is light and simple, and yet profound.

It starts off talking about loss, sadness and life’s unexpected twists, but moves on to plenty of love and laughter. In the end, you feel happy, and that’s exactly the aim of the director.

Thiruchitrambalam (Dhanush) lives with his dad (Prakash Raj), a police officer, and his grandfather Thiruchitrambalam (Bharathiraja).

His best friend from childhood Shoibana (Nithya Menen) lives a floor below and the two are inseparable, with Pazham sharing every aspect of his life with her, including his search for love.

Pazham hasn’t spoken to his dad for a decade and the two are at loggerheads at all times; it’s his grandad who, in fact, holds the family together.

Having dropped out of college, Pazham really doesn’t have a purpose in life. He seems to be aimlessly wandering when he suddenly bumps into his school crush Anusha (Raashi Khanna). He thinks he’s in love once again, and there begins his journey towards discovering love.

Performance-driven roles

The story may be a simple one, but it has a lot going for it in terms of dialogues, cast and songs.

Firstly, the cast of the film is excellent, and each of them — Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Prakash Raj, Bharathiraja, Raashi Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar — has done a splendid job in the film.

But the two who stand out are Dhanush and Nithya Menen — they share a camaraderie on screen that reflects real-life friendships. They are very much at ease even in the emotional scenes.

There is no over-the-top acting or theatrics required to convey feelings, and these two actors pull off their roles superbly.

The roles of the three actresses have been well-etched out — sans glamour and just performance-driven.

Witty dialogues & peppy songs

The movie is not just a slice-of-life film but also a romantic drama that has you in splits, thanks to Bharathiraja’s well-written lines.

As for the writing, Mithran Jawahar has done a very neat job with the screenplay. This is a tale that is extremely relatable and the sense of familiarity we feel with the characters makes us enjoy the film more.

Thiruchitrambalam doesn’t have high-octane action sequences or unrealistic romances; it is driven purely by the characters and the situations — often hilarious — they find themselves in. And that’s what makes this film so refreshing!

Music director Anirudh joins hands once again with Dhanush after seven years and the peppy songs and background music — which are already a huge hit — are another highlight of this movie.
