'Premalu' completes 50 days in over 381 theatres

Malayalam romantic-comedy Premalu, released on 9  February, has completed 50 days in 381 theatres on Friday, 29 March.

The film is still going strong in many cinema halls in South India and overseas, despite the hype for Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest outing Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life).

Starring Naslen K Gafoor, Mamitha Baiju, Shyam Mohan, Sangeeth Pratap, and Akhila Bharagavan in key roles, the flick is set against the backdrop of Hyderabad city.

Though its core theme is romance, Premalu is vocal about certain issues like the problems faced by students who want to go abroad to pursue higher studies.

The movie depicts a strong woman character named Reenu Thomas (Mamitha Baiju), who takes a firm stand on her career and marriage and represents today’s girls/women.

Naslen appears as a person who aims to settle abroad for a good future.

Directed by Girish AD, Premalu doesn’t glorify stalking but gives a new approach to comedy by incorporating realistic elements.

The movie received a positive response upon its release.

SS Karthikeya, the son of maverick director SS Rajamouli grabbed the Telugu rights. The Telugu dubbed version, released on 8 March, made ₹10 crore in just 10 days at the Telugu box office — an achievement for a small Malayalam film without bankable actors.

In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka too, the movie received a good response.

Premalu entered the ₹100-crore club on its 31st day. This is a major achievement for the makers as the flick was made on a budget of less than ₹10 crore.

The movie grossed ₹130 crore worldwide and ₹82 crore in the domestic market.

Premalu is the fifth Malayalam movie to gross ₹100 crore worldwide, after Pulimurukan (2017), Lucifer (2019), 2018: Everyone is a Hero (2023), and Manjummel Boys (2024).

Yash Raj Films acquired the UK and Europe rights of the film.

Directed by Girish AD, Premalu has songs composed by Vishnu Vijay.

Meanwhile, the makers are yet to confirm its OTT premiere date.
