Gautham Menon's debut directorial in Malayalam starts rolling

Tamil actor-director Gautham Vasudev Menon is all set to make his directorial debut in Malayalam with Mammootty in the lead role.

The pooja ceremony of the project was held in Kochi on Wednesday, 10 July. The film is touted to be a thriller.

Unconfirmed reports say Nayanthara will star opposite Mammootty in this film. They both teamed up for Rappakal (2005), Bhaskar the Rascal (2015), and Puthiya Niyamam (2016).

The cast of the upcoming film also includes Gokul Suresh, Lena, and Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum-fame Viji Venkatesh. More details are awaited.

Mammootty was supposed to work on Mahesh Narayanan’s directorial, which also stars Suresh Gopi, Fahadh Faasil, and Kunchacko Boban. Suresh Gopi confirmed the project during a media interaction in June. However, the shooting has been postponed for some reason.

Following this, Mammootty decided to join Gautham Menon’s Malayalam debut directorial. Interestingly, this is the sixth production venture of Mammootty Kampany.

Mammootty and his home banner delivered a hit recently with Turbo, which will make its OTT debut on SonyLIV in August. Last month, the actor launched the Arabic teaser of Turbo at the success meet in Sharjah.

Apart from Turbo, Mammootty Kampany delivered two blockbusters in 2023: Kaathal-The Core and Kannur Squad, both headlined by the Malayalam superstar.

Upcoming films of Mammootty, Gautham Menon

Mammootty’s Bazooka is another most anticipated movie of the year. It is helmed by debutant director Deeno Dennis, the son of veteran scriptwriter Kaloor Dennis. Interestingly, Gautham Menon is a part of its cast. The makers released his first-look poster in February this year, marking his birthday.

Team Bazooka wrapped up the shooting in March and is busy with post-production work.

On the other hand, Gautham Menon expressed his interest in working on Malayalam films on several occasions. The director said he would like to do films with Fahadh Faasil and Mammootty. Indeed, he debuted as an actor in Malayalam with Anwar Rasheed’s Trance (2020).

The Tamil actor-filmmaker is playing a key role in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s forthcoming Telugu film, NBK109. It is directed by Bobby Kolli.

Further, Gautham Menon will reprise his role in director Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 2, starring Soori and Vijay Sethupathi. He portrayed the role of Sunil Menon, a cop in Viduthalai Part 1.

The two-part movie received a standing ovation at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, held in January-February. Viduthalai Part 1 & Part 2 were screened twice at the film festival.

Meanwhile, Gautham Menon’s Dhruva Natchathiram, headlined by Vikram, is still pending release due to legal and financial issues. The filmmaker penned a long post to his fans and supporters last year, thanking them for their unwavering support when the film was repeatedly postponed.
