Vetrimaaran’s ‘Viduthalai Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’ receive a standing ovation at International Film Festival Rotterdam

Viduthalai Part 1 and 2 received a standing ovation at IFFR

Critically acclaimed director Vetrimaaran Viduthalai Part 1 and Part 2 have been screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2023. The project received a standing ovation at the event.

Sony Music South (India) shared the news on its X handle on Thursday, 1 February.

In Tamil, “Viduthalai” means Freedom. The project is a two-part movie which narrates the story of a group of rebels who fight against oppression and injustice in rural India.

The film boasts a stellar cast, including Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Bhavani Sre, Gautham Menon, Chethan, Rajiv Menon, and Prakash Raj.

The shooting of Viduthalai Part 2 is yet to be completed. However, filmmaker Vetrimaaran reportedly combined the footage of both parts into a single movie and screened it at the IFFR under the Limelight category.

Viduthalai Part 1 and Part 2 were premiered at the IFFR on 31 January and will be screened again on 3 February.

Sources say that the theatrical release of Viduthalai Part 2 will have an extended version, which will include the scenes that were not screened at the festival.

Viduthalai inspired by ‘Thunaivan’

Vetrimaaran is known for making hard-hitting, realistic films like Aadukalam (2011), Visaaranai (2015), and Asuran (2019).

Viduthalai is a joint production of RS Infotainment, Grassroot Film Company, and Red Giant Movies.

It has music by Ilaiyaraaja, cinematography by Velraj, and editing by Ramar.

B. Jeyamohan’s short story “Thunaivan” was the inspiration for the Tamil film.

Viduthalai Part 1 was released in theatres on 31 March 2023.

Tamil actor Soori, known for his comic roles, underwent a drastic transformation for the movie. His role as a sincere and honest police constable received appreciation from audiences and critics alike.

Even Vetrimaaran and Vijay Sethupathi lauded Soori for his spellbinding performance in the film.
