Mohanlal and Sibi Malayil's Devadoothan to re-release on 26 July

Mohanlal’s Devadoothan, released 24 years ago, will be re-released in 4K Dolby Atmos technology on 26 July.

At a press meet organised on Wednesday, 9 July, the makers announced the re-release date of Devadoothan and launched the trailer of the 4K version. They also revealed that the film was edited and remastered to suit today’s audiences.

Mohanlal appreciated the efforts of the team to re-release the film in theatres. The actor disclosed that he was surprised to learn that the team was planning to re-release the movie in the 4K version and that the analog print was available at Prasad Studios in Chennai.

“It’s very difficult to find analog prints of old films these days since many labs have been closed,” he observed while adding that Devadoothan has something to convey to the audience now and hence is being re-released.

Interestingly, the Malayalam movie won critical acclaim but turned out to be an average grosser upon its release in December 2000. However, it got a cult status over the years.

Mohanlal felt that Devadoothan failed to do well since it was ahead of its time and also because people might not have understood its pace. However, despite its underwhelming performance at the box office, it remains one of his favourite films.

Devadoothan is one of the films that’s closest to my heart. I was amused to learn that we could preserve the film so well. People in Bollywood are remastering old films and even converting Black-and-White movies to colour versions. In Kerala, it is a different scenario, and I am glad we are taking a step in that direction,” the Malayalam superstar said.

The film boasts brilliant technical aspects like an amazing soundtrack composed by Vidyasagar (which won him the Kerala State Film Award) and excellent cinematography.

Right time for re-release: Sibi Malayil

According to director Sibi Malayil, the decision to remaster Devadoothan was taken by a group of youngsters, led by Siyad Kokker’s (producer) daughter.

“When I realised the amount of effort the youngsters were putting in to remaster the film, I suggested that it could be edited and re-released. People say that Devadoothan came ahead of its time. I believe this is the right time for its re-release,” the veteran filmmaker quipped.

Sibi Malayil said they got several requests from the younger generation to re-release the film and promised the 4K version would be a visual spectacle.

Devadoothan scriptwriter Raghunath Paleri said, “The script remains close to my heart and I’m confident that the film will be a success this time.”

Devadoothan revolves around a gifted musician named Vishal Krishnamoorthy, who is haunted by a spirit. It also stars Jaya Prada, Vijayalakshmi, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Murali, Sarath Das and Vineeth Kumar in prominent roles.

It was produced by Siyad Koker under the banner of Koker Films.
