Karnataka MLC elections

Congress candidates filed nominations for the Karnataka Legislative Council by-polls at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Tuesday, 20 June, in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

The by-elections for the three vacant Legislative Council seats are scheduled on 30 June. The results will also be announced on the same day.

The by-polls were necessitated by the resignation of former BJP leaders Laxman Savadi, Baburao Chinchansur, and R Shankar.

Meanwhile, the BJP and the JD(S) did not field candidates as they did not have enough numbers in the Legislative Assembly to contest the by-polls.

In the current Assembly, the Congress has 136 seats, the BJP has 66 seats, the JD(S) has 19 seats, the Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha and the Sarvodya Karnataka Paksha each have one seat each, and two are independents.

Congress nominees file papers

All three Congress candidates – former CM Jagadish Shettar, Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology N S Boseraju, and former MLC Tippannappa Kamakanoor — filed papers on the last day of the nominations.

Thanking the Congress high command for blessing him with a ticket to contest in the by-polls, Shettar told reporters on Tuesday: “All the three candidates filed nominations in the presence of the chief minister and the deputy chief minister. I am confident that all three will win in this Legislative Council by-polls.”

He added: “We will work on strengthening the cadre in the coming days. The people have already blessed the party with a thumping majority in the assembly elections. We will work on getting the similar blessings from the people in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.”

Asked whether the party would make him the chairman of the Legislative Council, Shettar — who badly lost from the Hubballi-Dharwad Central Assembly seat in the May elections — said: “The party has nominated all three of us for the by-polls. We have not held any discussions on positions and posts.”

He added: “I have said it before and will say it again. I will manage whatever positions and responsibilities that will be offered by the Congress to me. This is my stand.”

CM confident of winning

After accompanying the candidates for the filing of the nominations, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that the party would win all three seats in the Legislative Council by-elections.

He told reporters: “Three nominees have filed papers. The members of the legislative assembly will elect these three candidates.”

He added: “I don’t know whether they will be elected unanimously, but no other party has fielded any candidate.”

He noted: “An independent candidate has filed papers. We will get a clear picture after the completion of the withdrawal and scrutiny process.”

BJP didn’t field any candidate

As the BJP doesn’t have enough numbers to fight the Legislative Council by-polls, it has not fielded any candidates.

Senior BJP leader Govind Karjol told South First: “The party doesn’t have enough numbers to win in the Legislative Council by-elections. The Congress has enough numbers to win all three seats. Hence, we have not fielded any candidate.”

Earlier, BJP state general secretary and MLC Ravikumar said that the party would field candidates on all three seats.
