heist dramas in Telugu

What do you think is the most happening trend in Telugu cinema? Invariably, the answer would be: Heist dramas.

Yes, if there is any potential script that could impress a producer in Tollywood these days, it is certainly a story of a thief and a smuggler.

Well, the Pushpa franchise seems to have fueled the imagination of Telugu filmmakers to come up with better characters of robbers that can entertain audiences and also collect good box office returns.

Ravi Teja as a robber

Telugu actor Ravi Teja was initially known for his comic timing. Later, he proved that he could nail some serious characters. Remember his films like Dongodu (2003), Vikramarkudu (2006), and Kick (2009) where he entertained audiences as a robber?

Now, once again, he is all set to play the character of a thief; this time, a popular one — a real-life thief named Nageswara Rao who once kept the police on their toes.

The Telugu film titled Tiger Nageswara Rao is about the story of this dangerous yet generous thief who hailed from a downtrodden community in Stuartpuram, the British-era settlement near Bapatla.

Though the man is not alive, his stories are a topic of discussion for any history enthusiast hailing from Andhra Pradesh.

Nageswara Rao’s escapades and bank heists have remained the stories of yore from the 1970s to the 1980s. The heist drama is releasing in theatres on 20 August.

The Mughal-era thief

A pan-Indian biggie, Hari Hara Veera Mallu starring Powerstar Pawan Kalyan is something that piques the interest of fans and film buffs alike.

The Telugu movie is likely to be a fictional story from the 17th-century Mughal Empire where Pawan will be seen as a thief. How he takes possession of the Kohinoor diamond before it passes through the hands of the Mughal rulers and then to the British East India Company forms the crux of the story.

Hari Hara Veera Mallu is directed by Krish Jagarlamudi who earlier helmed Vedam (2010), Kanche (2015), and Konda Polam (2021).

Pushpa, the dazzling smuggler

No filmmaker can weave a story as delightful as Sukumar P keeping a red sander smuggler as a protagonist. Thus Pushpa: The Rise came from the artistic and creative genius Sukumar who can tell a gripping story as well as add commercial touches to it.

The first part of Pushpa shows Allu Arjun as a red sander smuggler who rises from the ranks of woodcutters in the jungle to one who leads a gang of smugglers in Seshachalam forests.

The second part, Pushpa: The Rule tells how this dreadful smuggler-cum-gangster spreads his kingdom of illegal business to coastal shores and how he distributes his wealth to the poor. The film will hit theatres next year.

After achieving success with Ponniyin Selvan-1 (2022), Ponniyin Selvan-2 (2023), and Sardar (2022), Tamil actor Karthi is set to give thrills to audiences with his next film Japan.

Though the movie is not a Telugu one, the expectations of Telugu audiences are pretty high because of Karthi’s massive fanbase in Tollywood.

Touted to be a pan-Indian film, Japan has Karthi playing a thief and Anu Emmanuel will appear as his love interest.

Telugu comedian Sunil is playing a vital role in the movie which is directed by Raju Murugan.

Japan, a heist drama, draws inspiration from the real story of a man who robbed jewellery stores in Tamil Nadu.

A few young Telugu heroes like Sree Vishnu and Vishwak Sen are following the cue of the top heroes.

Sree Vishnu, who played a thief adorned with gold all over his body in Raja Raja Chora, is yet again playing the same character for the prequel. Raja Raja Chora earned praise from audiences and critics when it was released in theatres in 2021.

Director Hasith Goli is now coming up with a prequel, which also is a heist drama. The story is about how this thief resorts to illegal means. What’s the backstory behind the theft is the theme.

Similarly, Vishwak Sen, who made a splash with diverse roles, is taking up the role of a smuggler in the upcoming movie directed by Krishna Chaitanya. It is being produced by Sithara Entertainments.

The film is a rags-to-riches story of a youngster who makes it big after fighting all odds in his life.
