Telugu cinema 69th National Film Awards

People in Telugu cinema have an undying obsession with National Awards. But rarely have we heard about a Telugu film bagging a National Award in the recent past.

It is always a movie that boasts patriotism or a film that made an impact at large which usually bags the awards — say some artsy films, with gloomy characters — which might probably have the potential to move audiences into tears.

However, it’s raining awards for Telugu cinema this year. While Stylish Star Allu Arjun bagged the Best Actor Award for his performance in Pushpa: The Rise (2021), Buchi Babu Sana’s directorial Uppena (2021) won the Best Feature Film in Telugu Award.

Pushpa: The Rise, P Sukumar’s directorial, also won an award for Best Music Director (Songs) — Devi Sri Prasad.

Writer Chandrabose grabbed the Best Lyricist award for his song “Dham Dham Dham” in action entertainer flick Konda Polam (2021).

And guess what? SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster hit RRR dominated the scene by clinching as many as six awards.

  • Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment: RRR
  • Best Background Score: MM Keeravani for RRR
  • Best Action Choreography: King Solomon for RRR
  • Best Playback Singer (Male): Kaala Bhairava for “Komuram Bheemudo” in RRR
  • Best Dance Choreographer: Prem Rakshit for “Naatu Naatu‘” in RRR
  • Best Special Effects: V Srinivas Mohan for RRR

Hashtags like #NationalAwards, #Pushpa, #RRR started trending on the micro-blogging site Twitter ever since the awards were announced.

Similarly, netizens slammed the government for not announcing a single award for Jai Bhim starring Suirya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan. Some even asked why the National Awards Committee picked up Allu Arjun for his role as a smuggler in Pushpa: The Rise.

Similarly, several Tollywood celebs, including Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan Tej, Mahesh Babu, Nagarjuna, and NTR Jr wished Allu Arjun for his achievement.

Director Ram Gopal Varma, too left a congratulatory note on his Twitter handle in his usual cryptic style while indirectly mocking Pawan Kalyan and Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan.
