Telugu releases fail to pull crowds to theatres this summer

The final week of April is usually considered the peak of scorching summer, and this is when theatres traditionally bustle with activity as movies of major stars line up for release at the box office.

Sometimes, the cool confines of theatres prompt people to seek respite from the sweltering heat in summer. However, the scenario of film watching seems to have changed. Movie lovers seem to have lost interest in theatres! The Telugu film industry is no exception.

The audiences are showing little enthusiasm to watch new Telugu movies hitting the theatres every week this summer season.

The lack of entertainment has also impacted the film business in Tollywood. Notable Telugu movies are held back from being released in theatres this summer due to the prevailing disinterest among moviegoers.

For instance, this week saw the release of the Telugu dubbed version of the Tamil film Rathnam, starring Vishal and Priya Bhavani Shankar in the lead. However, director Hari‘s latest outing failed to kindle any interest among film enthusiasts.

There have been no takers for other recent releases as well.

Audience prefer for OTT over theatres

The once-packed film theatres are wearing a deserted look even during the weekends this summer. Exhibitors are grappling with the cancellation of shows and reduced occupancy.

Instead of stepping out to watch films, audiences opt to watch them on OTT platforms in the comfort of their homes.

Just on Sunday, 28 April, three major Telugu films debuted on the OTT platforms — Tillu Square, The Family Star, and Bhimaa.

However, audiences are flocking to the OTT giant Netflix to catch Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Tillu Square.

Meanwhile, Vijay Devarakonda’s The Family Star premiered on Amazon Prime Video. The movie is generating a flurry of online reactions to his film.

The trend reflects a reluctance among audiences to go to theatres as all major ones had disappointed. Instead, they are opting for OTT platforms.

Netizens also trolled Vijay Deverakonda asking why they would go to theatres to watch his flop movie.

Another dud of the season, Bhimaa, headlined by Gopichand, also seems to be getting good viewership on Disney+ Hotstar.

Nevertheless, movie enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for the OTT debut of Manjummal Boys on Disney+ Hotstar.
