Malayalam movies enjoy a dream run at Tamil box office

Malayalam movies have outperformed Tamil films in Tamil Nadu this February.

The two major Tamil films released in February — Lal Salaam and Siren — did not meet the expectations of the makers and audiences.

However, three Malayalam movies — Premalu, Bramayugam, and Manjummel Boys — have turned out to be the box-office hits in the state.

Premalu was the frontrunner until the release of the sensational hit Manjummel Boys.

Lal Salaam and Siren fail to impress

In January, the two major Pongal releases — Captain Miller and Ayalaan had a good theatrical run and crossed the ₹50-crore mark. But the other flick couldn’t sustain the momentum.

For example, the extended cameo of Rajinikanth in Lal Salaam and Jayam Ravi’s Siren failed to pull crowds to theatres. Both flicks weren’t able to collect ₹50 crore worldwide.

Lal Salaam collected ₹32 crore gross worldwide box, while Siren managed only ₹13 crore at the global box office.

This helped the Malayalam movies gain the attention of the Tamil viewers.

Released on 9 February, Premalu collected ₹1.42  crore gross, while Bramayugam collected ₹1.85 crore at the Tamil box office. But Manjummel Boys, which hit the screens on 2 February, set the cash ringing in Tamil Nadu.

Premalu collected more than ₹73 core and is expected to collect ₹100 crore very soon. The Telugu dubbed version of the flick will be released on 8 March.

Meanwhile, Mammootty’s Bramayugam is enjoying a good theatrical run in Tamil Nadu. It earned around ₹1 crore at the Tamil box office thus far and continues to have good occupancy.

However, the Tamil movie Lover, featuring Manigandan in the lead, received wide appreciation.

Manjummel Boys turned out to be a sensational hit in Tamil Nadu.

The Malayalam movie has a Tamil connection. The “Kanmani Anbodu” song from Kamal Hassan’s Guna (1991) getting featured in the film worked wonders for it.

Director Chidambaram said if Guna and the song were not there, Manjummel Boys would not have happened.

The Malayalam flick pays tribute to Kamal Haasan and Guna, which was shot in Devil’s Kitchen (Guna Caves) in Kodaikanal.

Team Manjummel Boys recently met up with Kamal Haasan in Chennai and shared their experiences while shooting the film.

The veteran Tamil actor shared his joy with the team after watching the movie.

After meeting Kamal Haasan, Chidambaram described the moment as “the climax of Manjummel Boys.

The team also visited actor-politician Udhaynidhi Stalin and actors Vikram, Dhanush, and Siddharth during their visit to Tamil Nadu.

Draws rave reviews

Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj too appreciated the movie. He described it “Super… Fantastic… Marvellous Film. Filmmaking at its best… Hats off (sic).”

Guna director Bharathi, after watching Manjummel Boys, said, “When the ‘Kanmani Anpodu‘ song was played in the movie, the whole theatre erupted in joy and cheers. I had goosebumps. My eyes were filled with tears. Kamal Hassan also had the same feeling.”

The major theatres in Chennai city are running houseful as Manjummel Boys is still going strong.

In Kerala, the films of Vijay, Rajinikanth, Suriya, and Ajith Kumar ran to packed houses upon their release.

Rakesh Gowtham, the owner of Vettri Theatres in Chennai, posted on X that the two screens in his theatre complex are running houseful owing to the craze for Majummel Boys.

Mints money at Tamil box office

According to trade experts, Manjummel Boys collected over ₹5 crore in Tamil Nadu in nine days. The advance sales in the state on Saturday, 2 March, were put at ₹1.54 crore.

It earned around ₹59 crore on its ninth day of release. This is the third Malayalam movie to collect ₹50 crore after Premalu and Bramayugam.

Earlier, Nivin Pauly’s Premam (2015) made such a huge impact at the Tamil box office.

A survival thriller, Manjummel Boys narrates the tale of 10 friends who leave for Guna caves in Kodaikanal and get trapped inside the cave.

It was released on 22 February and opened to rave reviews.
