28 years of Indian, Shankar releases a new poster

On Thursday, 9 May, Kamal Haasan’s Indian — director Shankar’s vigilante film from 1996 — celebrated its 28th anniversary.

Marking the occasion, Shankar released a special poster on X.

The poster featured Kamal Haasan’s appearances in both the first and the second parts (Indian 2) of the film and has the hashtags — 28 years of Indian and 28 years of Senapathy.

Bankrolled by TM Rathnam under Sri Surya Movies Entertainment, Indian also featured Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Nedumudi Venu, Senthil, Goundamani, and Sukanya in prominent roles.

It was touted as the costliest movie at the time.

Given that Lyca Productions is bankrolling Indian 2, a sequel to the original, they created a special tribute video to mark the film’s anniversary.

In the video, one can see Kamal Haasan accepting the National Award for his work in Indian.

In addition, some images took us back in time, and a pulsating tune, composed by Anirudh Ravichander exclaimed, “Comeback, Indian!”

Lyca Productions’ tweet teased that a theatrical release is approaching as they wrote, “It’s time to bring back the legend, Senapathy.”

Indian became well-known and popular throughout India before going on to become a cult classic.

Notably, Kamal Haasan played two distinct roles in the movie — Senapathy, an Indian freedom fighter who later became a vigilante, and Chandru, Senapathy’s son-cum-car inspector.

Indian, which had music by AR Rahman, won three National Film Awards.

Director Shankar sets the story 27 years after the events of the first Indian movie, which concludes with Senapathy declaring that he is still alive and will reappear if injustice triumphs.

Also bankrolled by Red Giant Movies, Indian 2 has Ravi Varman cinematography and editor Sreekar Prasad.

The film has Rakul Preet Singh, Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha, late Vivekh, Kajal Agarwal, SJ Suryah, Samuthirakani, Delhi Ganesh, Brahmanandam, late Manobala, Jagan, Kalidas Jayaram, and Gulshan Grover in pivotal roles.

The release date of Indian 2 is yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, Shankar is busy with Ram Charan and Kiara Advani’s Game Changer.

Kamal Haasan is occupied with Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life and an untitled film starring H Vinoth. Besides, he plays the role of an antagonist in Kalki 2898-AD starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone.
