Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan finally had her way: As desired by her, the state’s Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy, accompanied by officials, called on the Governor and clarified to her several points in the Telangana Universities Common Recruitment Board Bill, which is pending with her.

Apparently, the minister made an appointment with Raj Bhavan and met the Governor at about 5 pm on Thursday, 10 November, with the intention of avoiding any confrontation with her.

When the Governor sent a missive to the state government on Wednesday asking the minister to meet her as she wanted clarifications on several provisions of the bill, the government’s response remained cold.

But the Governor, realising that the minister might not call on her, called a press conference and — besides discussing other things — explained her difficulty in giving her assent to the pending bill without knowing its contents.

She said this was very crucial as the bill pertained to making appointments to universities. The government then decided to play along and sent the minister to her.

At the meeting

During the meeting, Tamilisai conveyed her concerns related to the need for total transparency in the recruitment process through the board, taking up recruitment as early as possible in an unbiased manner, maintaining eligibility-based recruitment, strictly following the UGC norms with regard to the recruitment of the faculty, and addressing the concerns of the aspirants from Telangana.

Besides these issues, the Governor also advised the minister and the officials to give top priority to improving the infrastructure in the state universities, with a special focus on improving hostel and laboratory facilities.

“The library facilities and digital resources need to be improved in the universities for the benefit of the students on a priority basis,” she added.

The Governor also suggested to the Education Minister and other officials to strengthen the “Chancellor Connects Alumni” in all the universities for promoting the participation of the alumni for the all-around development of the universities.

The minister was accompanied by Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) Chairman R Limbadri, Collegiate Education Commissioner Navin Mittal, and Education Secretary Vakati Karuna.
