Telangana a step closer to cleanse TSPSC: Governor accepts resignations of chairman, 3 members

The Telangana government is one step closer to purging the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC), whose credibility came under a cloud following the leakage of question papers for various competitive examinations held last year.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Wednesday, 10 January, accepted the resignations of the TSPSC’s chairman and former IAS officer B Janardhan Reddy and three other members.

They are R Satyanarayana, Prof Bandi Lingareddy, and Karam Ravinder Reddy. They put in their papers after the change of the government in the state.

The process

The Raj Bhavan, in a communique, said that as soon as the Governor received the resignations, they were sent to the state government through the chief minister for circulation as per business rules along with the remarks and the opinion of the advocate general.

The state government, after reviewing the resignations and obtaining the opinion of the advocate general once again, circulated the file to the governor for acceptance of all four resignations on Tuesday.

The Governor on Wednesday accepted all the resignations without prejudice to the ongoing investigation into the question paper leakage muddle and any potential future criminal proceedings.

The Raj Bhavan communique said that every precaution had been taken to safeguard the interests of the unemployed youths while deciding on the resignations of the chairman and the three members.

It said that the Governor remained committed to upholding the mandate of the Constitution and the principles of justice, transparency, and accountability.

The entire process of accepting the resignations was completed in one day with utmost diligence and in adherence to legal procedures, the communique said.

What lies ahead?

After the Congress came to power in Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy took a keen interest in cleansing the Augean stables of the TSPSC.

They were determined to clear the cobwebs in the TSPSC and make it a foolproof institution for conducting competitive examinations for filling the state government vacancies, along the lines of the UPSC.

The focus has lain on the TSPSC on account of the sensitive nature of the issue relating to filling government vacancies since the youth of the state took an active part in the Telangana movement hoping that they would get jobs once the state is formed.

The chief minister and the irrigation minister met with UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni on Friday in Delhi, where they discussed implementing best practices in TSPSC to restore its credibility in the wake of the leak of question papers of the Group I preliminary and two other examinations.

Since the unemployed youth could not get the jobs they expected during the last 10 years after the formation of the state in 2014, the Congress exploited the frustration that the youth were going through in the elections, which is believed to be one of the factors that had helped the party win the Assembly elections.
