Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, 9 May, asserted that the INDIA bloc would make India’s poverty vanish instantly after coming to power at the Centre.

The Congress leader was addressing an election rally in Narsapur in the Medak Lok Sabha constituency in the state.

He said that this would be possible by depositing ₹1 lakh per year into the bank accounts of women heads of families.

The plan

Rahul Gandhi said that the INDIA bloc had decided to prepare a list of women heads of families that were in penury, so that the amount could be credited into their bank accounts.

“We will credit ₹8,500 into the bank of each woman every month. It would supplement their family income,” he said.

“They will spend the money on their needs, which will trigger a proliferation of small and medium industries to produce goods. These industries in turn will provide employment to your children,” he said.

The Congress leader claimed that this scheme was revolutionary and had not been tried anywhere in the world.

Sooner than later, other countries also would follow India’s example to remove poverty, he said.

He said the Congress-led INDIA coalition would guarantee employment to eligible youths in PSUs and government establishments for one year to help them stand on their feet.

He added it would also initiate measures to fill the 30 lakh vacancies in the Central government.

On constitution and reservation

The Congress leader, in a vituperative attack on the BJP for its perceived attempts to dump the Constitution, said that Congress on the other hand wanted to protect it as it was the source of power for the weak and the underprivileged.

“People are what they are because of the Constitution. They draw their rights from this book, which had been authored after an elaborate and extensive exercise,” he said.

The Congress MP said that BJP wants to rescind the Constitution to facilitate the removal of reservations now available to the people of various sections.

This was why it was trying to privatise public sector undertakings — so that there would be no reservations.

He said Congress would fight for the protection of the Constitution, come what may.

“The upcoming elections are between the forces which want to destroy the Constitution and those who want to uphold it as it guaranteed rights to the SCs, STs, OBCs, and other sections of people,” he said.

On caste census and money

Underscoring the importance of the promised caste census, Rahul Gandhi said that the INDIA bloc would take it up as soon as it came to power at the Centre.

“The caste census will let everyone know which caste has how much population, and it will become easy to help them,” he said.

The former Congress president also pointed out that his party was committed to increasing the cap of 50 percent on reservations because more people needed reservations.

He said OBCs were more than 50 percent of the population, Dalits 15 percent, STs 8 percent, minorities 15 percent, and those belonging to the general category were only 8 percent.

He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of divesting airports, sea ports, infrastructure projects, and defence companies during his 10-year rule.

Under his dispensation, about 20-25 people had become crorepatis, said Rahul.

“We, on the other hand, want to make crores of Indians lakhpatis,” he said, adding that the INDIA bloc would let the people of the country have as much money as the 20-25 billionaires — which BJP has created — have.
