GMR School of Aviation.

In a groundbreaking move, GMR Aero Technic — the airframe Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility based at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad — has announced the launch of the GMR School of Aviation, offering a comprehensive four-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) programme.

The announcement by GMR officials on Tuesday, 9 January, marks the unveiling of the first-of-its-kind aviation school located within the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park at the Hyderabad airport.

This aviation school, in technical collaboration with Airbus, is set to become operational in July.

Spanning 75,000 sq ft within a four-acre campus, the school is set to establish a benchmark in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering training in India.

It will also offer aircraft-specific training courses, domestic and international degree programmes, and ancillary courses such as aircraft structures, aircraft composite courses, continuing airworthiness management organisation/maintenance planning courses, and stores management courses.

While the inauguration is currently scheduled for July, courses will commence post the Class 12 Board examinations. Admission details will be made available on the website, accompanied by an entry test for prospective students.

Ashok Gopinath, President, GMR Aero Technic, tells South First, “There is no age limit to apply for the course as of now, but the students must have successfully completed their Class 12 examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with minimum requirement of 65 percent. We have received nearly 70 to 80 queries already and we are collating the data.”

He added that they are currently working out the fee structure and are expecting it to be one-third cheaper than other aviation schools.

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course has been accredited by both the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

“Students can opt for either one of the certifications. With EASA, one will have a global certification, however, to work in India, one has to get the DGCA certification. The examination will be online, where the students are asked questions in their respective systems and no two students will get the same questions. The exams will be conducted according to the EASA and DGCA guidelines,” he added.

The GMR officials also announced a technical collaboration with with Airbus. They will provide the course content and standards, and also train the faculty so that the instructors all operate on global Airbus standards.

GMR Aero Technic is collaborating with Airbus to offer the unique combined B1.1 and B2 AME license programme. The curriculum extends to include specialised aircraft-specific type training courses, as well as comprehensive studies in aircraft structures, aircraft composites, and other ancillary subjects.

Gopinath highlighted that students enrolling in the EASA programme will have the opportunity to undergo two years of academic training on-campus, followed by two years of practical, on-the-job experience at GMR Aero Technic.

Its features

The school will boast a library with model manuals for extensive reading, a simulator process providing a hands-on feel of aircraft operations, and a hangar for practical sessions.

Students can explore the features and components of an Airbus A320 model, gaining valuable experience before entering the field. Officials said that in most aviation schools, it is more theoretical. Students are often taught with smaller aircrafts but they struggle to keep up when they are on ground.

Placement opportunities include GMR MRO, GMR Line Stations, Airlines, OEMs, and maintenance organisations in India and abroad.

Notably, students have the unique opportunity to take up a paid two-year Maintenance Experience at GMR MRO in Hyderabad.
