Warangal engineering student suicide

On the same day that Dr Preethi — a woman medical student under treatment in Hyderabad after apparently attempting to end her life — breathed her last, an engineering student in Warangal ended her life after a male friend shared her personal photos with others, the police said on Monday, 27 February.

The woman had a friendship with an undergraduate student who loved her, they said. However, she became acquainted with another engineering student later.

The woman and the undergraduate student developed differences and the latter allegedly shared some personal photos of hers with friends.

This upset the woman and she allegedly ended her life at a relative’s house on Sunday evening, the police said.

The woman’s parents alleged that she took the extreme step due to the harassment by the two men, who are now in police custody.

Medical student dies

Meanwhile, Dr Preethi, the medical PG student who attempted suicide on Wednesday allegedly after being harassed by one of her seniors, a male doctor, at the Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal, breathed her last in Hyderabad on Sunday.

She was found unconscious on Wednesday by the staff and doctors and was given initial treatment in the Kakatiya Medical College itself, the police said.

Telangana Health Minister Harish Rao said in a statement that Dr Preeti’s last breath while fighting death was the most painful.

The NIMS medical team worked tirelessly to save her, he said.

“We thought that Dr Preethi would come back completely healthy, but she went to the world of no return,” said Rao.

Warangal Commissioner of Police (CP) AV Ranganath told reporters that there was apparently a targeted harassment of Preethi by the senior at Kakatiya, Dr SA Saif, which could have driven her to attempt suicide.

Hours after arresting Saif, the officer said he was booked for the woman’s attempted suicide.

The police also invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Anti-Ragging Act against the accused.

“It is clear that there was targeted harassment of this girl by Saif. He was making remarks to insult her in a WhatsApp group,” said Ranganath.
