Top Telangana BJP leaders were asked by Amit Shah to exercise restraint on the Kavitha-Delhi liquor scam link

As the central investigation agencies step up their probe into the Delhi liquor scam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is understood to have asked the party leaders from Telangana not to make any rash comments on Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter and BRS MLC K Kavitha, whose name has figured in the charge sheet filed by the ED in a Delhi court.

Shah reportedly gave clear instructions to the party leaders to this effect when they met him in Delhi on Tuesday, 28 February, and instructed them to leave the issue to the probe agencies.

The senior leaders of the party in Delhi drew the attention of the state leaders to the fact that even the Congress was maintaining strategic silence on making predictions regarding what course the investigation would take.

According to sources, there was an elaborate discussion on the latest political situation in Telangana, the internal issues in the party, and so on.

The need for unity, the top honchos of the party underlined, was all the more necessary now as there would soon be elections to the state Assembly.

Leave Kavitha liquor scam link to to authorities

In the course of the discussion, the leaders brought up the “involvement” of Kavitha in the Delhi liquor scam but Amit Shah had told them that it would be better to leave the probe to the investigation agencies.

There was no point in reacting politically as it may give rise to the impression that the BJP was remote-controlling the investigation agencies to wreak vengeance on the Opposition parties.

One of the leaders, endorsing the party leader’s view, said that there was no need for the BJP to waste its breath speaking about Kavitha’s “involvement” in the Delhi liquor scam at a time when her father and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had not uttered a single word of condemnation after the ED had mentioned her name in the chargesheet.

Exercise restraint, says Shah

Shah’s advice came on the back of state BJP leaders accusing Kavitha of playing a major role in the liquor scam at the party’s street-corner meetings. He also asked them to be careful as, going forward, there might be resistance from the BRS against the investigation.

Interestingly, Amit Shah’s advice to the party leaders to exercise restraint over the liquor scam link came despite Kavitha tearing into the BJP for what she called the “saffron party’s political vendetta against the Opposition parties”, regarding the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

The go-slow advice by Shah is also being seen as a way to reduce Opposition criticism on the BJP. This might evoke sympathy for Kavitha and the BRS if the BJP turns the screws harder.

Upcoming Assembly elections

The meeting also took stock of the preparation for the Assembly elections later this year. Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar, after the meeting with Amit Shah and party national president JP Nadda, said that the saffron party would contest all the 119 Assembly constituencies in the state.

To strengthen the party on all fronts before the elections, the party has decided to conduct rallies on a large scale in the erstwhile 10 districts in Telangana within a month and organise a massive public meeting to mark the culmination of the rallies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be invited for the public meeting to be conducted in the state soon.

Dashing false claims

“The BRS and a section of media is spreading false news that the BJP is not having sufficient candidates in several constituencies,” Bandi Sanjay said, while replying to a question.

He added that it was the BJP that contested elections in all the 119 constituencies in the last Assembly elections in the state.

The BJP state president said that the saffron party was the only alternative to BRS in the state and the people want change as they were fed up with the state government led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
