Operation Toofan nets drugs worth ₹10 crore

Synopsis: According to official figures, police registered 2,575 cases during the first 15 days of the operation. Seizures included 1,589 grams of MDMA, 146.49 kg of cannabis, 464.045 grams of hashish oil, 350.439 grams of brown sugar, 11 LSD stamps and 141 cannabis plants. Authorities also arrested two foreign nationals in recent operations conducted in Delhi and Bengaluru-linked investigations.

Kerala’s intensified anti-drug campaign, Operation Toofan, has recorded significant success within just 15 days of its launch, with narcotics worth more than ₹10 crore seized and 2,778 people arrested across the state.

Announcing the progress after a high-level inter-agency coordination meeting at the Police Headquarters, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the operation would be strengthened further through enhanced cooperation between central and state agencies.

Adding momentum to the campaign, actor Mohanlal has expressed his willingness to serve as a “Toofan Warrior,” joining the government’s fight against drug abuse.

Several other film personalities have also volunteered to support the initiative, with the Home Minister calling upon the public to become part of the growing anti-drug movement.

2,575 cases registered

According to official figures, police registered 2,575 cases during the first 15 days of the operation.

Seizures included 1,589 grams of MDMA, 146.49 kg of cannabis, 464.045 grams of hashish oil, 350.439 grams of brown sugar, 11 LSD stamps and 141 cannabis plants.

Authorities also arrested two foreign nationals in recent operations conducted in Delhi and Bengaluru-linked investigations.

The minister said the campaign would now move forward through three key pillars—Toofan Strike, Toofan Warriors, and Toofan Care—while a special initiative titled “One Million Toofan Goals” has been launched in association with the Department of General Education to create widespread awareness among students and youth.

As part of preventive efforts, police have already conducted 1,526 awareness classes and 138 counselling sessions across Kerala.

State launches T-INT

The State Intelligence Department has also launched T-INT, a dedicated intelligence-driven initiative aimed at identifying drug networks and eliminating their sources.

Highlighting the importance of coordinated enforcement, the Home Minister noted that cooperation among multiple agencies is crucial to track narcotics trafficking routes and dismantle supply chains.

The meeting witnessed active participation from officials of the Customs Department, Coast Guard, Narcotics Control Bureau, Revenue Intelligence, Coastal Police, State Intelligence, Kerala Excise, Central Industrial Security Force, Railway Protection Force, and the National Technical Research Organisation, among other agencies.

The government also plans to hold periodic coordination meetings at airports and seaports, introduce more scientific detection methods, and provide specialized training for police dogs to identify narcotics.
