A Kannada digital media outlet, Eedina has released a pre-poll survey for the 2024 Lok Sabha election in Karnataka, projecting 17 seats for Congress and 11 for the BJP-JDS alliance.

By its estimate, seven Lok Sabha seats may witness neck-and-neck fights.

The portal (eedina.com) accurately predicted the results of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections. It released a poll survey 21 days ahead of the results, saying the Congress would secure 135 seats, the BJP 66 seats, and the JD(S) 19 seats, which was spot on.

Regarding vote share, the 2024 survey says the Congress share may surge by nearly 12 percent compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. It is expected to get 43.77 percent of the votes.

It grossed 31.88 percent in 2019. The grand old party may also increase its vote tally compared to the last Assembly polls.

In contrast, the BJP-JD(S) vote share is predicted to decline by 18.7 percent compared to the previous parliament election.

The alliance partners are expected to gross 42.35 percent of the votes in 2024. This is much less than in 2019 when the BJP alone secured a record 51.38 percent of the vote.

The JD(S), then in alliance with Congress, got 9.67 percent. Together, they cornered 61.05 percent of the total vote. It is over nine percent less than Edina’s prediction for the alliance in 2024.

Going by the Edina survey, the BJP is likely to witness a decline in its voter share for the first time since the 1996 polls in Karnataka.

The pre-poll survey, which has a sample size of 52,678, highlights that 45.19 percent of respondents felt Narendra Modi should get a third term as prime minister. At the same time, only 33.06 percent felt that Modi’s work was excellent.

The survey was conducted from 15 February to 5 March 2024, before the political parties announced their candidates.

Seat share projection

Regarding seats, in Karnataka, the JD(S) has an alliance with the BJP-led NDA. The BJP will likely contest in 25 seats, and the JD(S) will contest in three seats. The Congress is going it alone.

The survey predicts that the Congress tally may go up from one seat to a whopping 17, while—despite the alliance—the BJP-JD(S) is expected to get only 11 seats.

In the 2019 polls, the BJP won a record 25 seats, while the Congress, the JD(S), and an independent each won one seat.
