Thrishanku (Malayalam)

Cast: Anna Ben, Arjun Ashokan, Suresh Krishna, and Krishna Kumar
Director: Achyuth Vinayak
Producer: Sanjay Routre and Sarita Patil
Music: Jay Unnithan
Runtime: 1 hour 53 minutes

Thrishanku, meaning a crucial situation, is an apt name for a love story.

Filmmakers’ first choice is always romantic films, and newcomer Achyuth Vinayak joins the league with one of its kind love stories.

But how can love stories be made interesting? Pranaya Vilasam (2023) and Ntikkakkakkoru Premondarnn (2023) are some of the films that have interesting plots which connect with the audience.

Debutant Achyuth Vinayak has an interesting story to tell. Eloping is the central theme of the movie. Yes, a cliche one, but eloping with two aged relatives (uncles) to Mangaluru without their knowledge has the potential to be a funny story.

The one-hour 52-minute movie is about two young couples who eloped to Mangaluru. Mature and immature relationships are the two types shown by the director.

Fun ride

An unexpected journey from Kollam to Managaluru by Sethu (Arjun Ashokan) and Megha (Anna Ben), with Sethu’s uncle in a KSRTC bus, makes the movie engaging till the interval.

Sethu and Megha had decided to elope. But their plans get shattered as Sethu’s sister Sumi (Zarin Shihab) elopes with her boyfriend Alex the same day they had planned.

Chandrahasan Nair (Nandu) and Biju (Suresh Krishna) decide to travel to Mangaluru where Sumi and her boyfriend are believed to have gone as Sumi studies there.

Twist

Sethu is forced to join Biju and Nair in search of his sister.

A helpless Megha, who left home, doesn’t have a choice but to join Sethu in Mangaluru without the knowledge of his relatives.

This journey is hilarious with the one-liners and situational comedies.

Actor-politician Krishna Kumar dons the role of a senior police officer who is the father of Megha.

He is against the relationship of Sethu and Megha, who are from two different religions. He also travels to Mangaluru with his junior police officer.

Megha has to join Sethu and his relatives in disguise as Sumi’s friend who is studying at the same college.

The plot of the movie is a kind of cat-and-mouse game as Sethu and his relatives are in search of Sumi and her lover while Megha’s dad gets to know about Sethu. He is following them with his contacts in the Karnataka police department.

What happens to these two pairs of lovers forms the crux of the movie. It would be a spoiler if everything is written here. Better watch it in theatres.

Performances

Comedy is the soul of this movie. Arjun Ashokan has proved to be a subtle actor capable of doing lighter and more serious roles.

He is back again with a love story after his successful movie Pranaya Vilasam. In Thrishanku, Arjun has a good screen space, and he is surely an asset to the industry.

Anna Ben, the female lead also has a good role to play. She had been trolled for her role in her previous film Kaapa (2022).

But in Thrishanku, Anna Ben has an equal role to play as Megha, who is a strong female character.

Contrasting relationships

A major highlight of Thrishanku is the relationship between Megha and Sethu. They have been in love for quite a long time and have decided to marry.

Contrary to that, Sethu’s sister’s lover is not serious about their relationship. He likes partying and isn’t mature enough to start a family life.

Zarin Shihab as Sumi had a good role. The young actress had earlier proved her acting skills in the movie B 32 Muthal 44 Vare (2023), in which she had done some brave scenes.

Combination worked

A plus point of the movie is the combination between Nandu and Suresh Krishna. Both of the senior actors fared well in the comedy scenes.

Achyuth Vinayak was an associate of Priyadarshan. Some of the scenes resembled the Priyadarshan style of comedy. Especially the ones inside the pub in Mangalore were hilarious.

It was quite good to see Suresh Krishna and Nandu getting important roles throughout the movie. Nandu as Chandrahasan Nair is a good character who is proud of being a member of the upward class.

Some scenes of Nandu are a satire towards the upper caste Hindus. At the same time, Suresh Krishna’s counter dialogues with Nandu erupted in laughter in theatres.

Other characters

Krishna Kumar as Megha’s father was good as the senior actor who is getting a good role after a long time. TG Ravi as the grandfather of Sethu, was an interesting character as rarely does the veteran actor get comedy roles.

The usage of drugs in colleges and schools is a hot topic in Kerala now. In the movie, since the film is based in Mangaluru, the director has taken the liberty to showcase the use of drugs outside Kerala.

Music and technical aspects

The music of Thrishanku is composed by Jay Unnithan, and it went well with the movie. Before its release itself, the songs were well received.

Jayesh Mohan and Ajmal Sabu have done cinematography and captured the city of Mangaluru with their lenses. Dussehra gets a mention in the movie, and some of the night shots were good to watch.

The editing by Rakesh Cherumadom is important as the movie is less than 2hrs. Audiences these days aren’t very happy to sit inside the theatre for a long time, and they complain of lag often.

The final take

Thrishanku is a romantic comedy that entertains the audience with its interesting plot of eloping.
