Dhanush's Raayan gets A certificate

Sun Pictures has announced that Dhanush’s second directorial venture, Raayan, has received an “A” certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification. The film will be released in theatres on 26 July, just two days before the actor’s birthday.

Raayan is Dhanush’s second film, after Vada Chennai (2018) under the direction of Vetrimaaran, to receive the “A” certificate. The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Accompanying the announcement was a gruesome poster showing Dhanush walking on a blood-soaked path, with the tagline, “Blood is thicker than everything.”

Last month, the actor released new posters revealing the revised release date, moving Raayan from 13 June to 26 July. These posters featured him sporting a moustache and beard.

Written by and starring Dhanush, Raayan marks his 50th film as an actor and his second directorial outing after Pa Paandi (2017). Interestingly, this is the first time that the actor is directing his filmmaker-brother Selvaraghavan.

The film features an ensemble cast, including Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan, SJ Suryah, Kalidas Jayaram, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Sundeep Kishan, Saravanan, Aparna Balamurali, and Dushara Vijayan.

The technical team includes AR Rahman for music, Om Prakash for cinematography, Prasanna GK for editing, Peter Hein for stunts, and dance choreography by Prabhudheva and Baba Baskar.

Dushara and Kalidas about Dhanush’s directorial

Dushara Vijayan, who plays a crucial role in Raayan, mentioned learning valuable lessons from Dhanush. She stated in an interview, “He taught me the importance of listening with a neutral expression and being fully present in the scene we’re filming.”

Kalidas Jayaram was equally all praise for Dhanush, adding that he is actively involved in directing rather than just giving orders.

He pointed out that Dhanush’s directorial dedication is intense. “He resolves issues on set until achieving perfection in his craft,” Kalidas was quoted, as saying.

Touted to be a revenge thriller, Raayan generated immense hype since its announcement. Recently, the makers hosted a grand audio launch in Chennai, attended by the star-studded cast and crew.

Dhanush joined AR Rahman on stage, where the acclaimed composer praised the actor’s singing performance. He then thanked his fans for their unwavering support throughout his career. This closed event will soon be telecast on Sun TV.

Raayan will enjoy a solo release with no major competitors at the box office.

On the acting front, Dhanush will feature in the Telugu-Tamil bilingual film Kubera, directed by Sekhar Kammula.

Additionally, he is slated to portray the lead role in the Ilaiyaraaja biopic, directed by Arun Matheswaran, who previously collaborated with Dhanush on Captain Miller (2024).

Further, Dhanush announced his third directorial project, Nilavukku Enmel Ennadi Kobam. The teen romantic-comedy features Priya Prakash Varrier, Mathew Thomas, and Anikha Surendran in significant roles.
