Vijay Sethupathi’s milestone 50th film, Maharaja, crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the box office. Directed and written by Nithilan Saminathan, known for Kurangu Bommai (2017), this action thriller features Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap in a significant role. After a successful theatrical run, Maharaja is gearing up for its OTT release.

Netflix has officially announced that the Vijay Sethupathi-led film will begin streaming on 12 July 2024. Maharaja will be accessible in Tamil along with dubbed versions in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, as confirmed by the OTT giant, in a recent social media post.

Maharaja tells the story of a barber living with his daughter, Jyothi after his wife’s tragic death. Jyothi survived; thanks to a metal dustbin, lovingly named Lakshmi. The father-daughter duo develops a deep emotional attachment to the dustbin. When Maharaja reports a robbery at a police station, he reveals that Lakshmi has been stolen, setting the stage for the film’s plot.

Maharaja review: Vijay Sethupathi reigns in this convoluted yet convincing drama

In an interview, Vijay Sethupathi, interestingly, confessed that he had taken on many film projects for sentimental and emotional reasons. “I don’t do that anymore, but in the past, I’ve taken on projects because the filmmakers had helped me in some way. I’ve only chosen to work on films I believed were good, not ones I considered bad.”

The actor acknowledged that despite some films not being well-received, he is aware that they still have their own set of fans. “There were occasions when I thought some people I worked with would succeed, but unfortunately, not everyone did, which was disappointing.”

Nithilan co-wrote the dialogues with Raam Murali for the film. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram under Passion Studios and Jagadish Palanisamy under The Route banner, Maharaja boasts cinematography by Dinesh Purushothaman, music by B Ajaneesh Loknath, and editing by Philomin Raj.
