Tamil watchlist November 2023

Much to the delight of film connoisseurs, a number of big Tamil movies are releasing in cinema halls for Diwali 2023.

Among the releases, four films stand out and are bound to be watched with great interest by one and all.

Here’s the list of those Tamil movies that are expected to set the cash registers ringing at the box office:

Japan

National Award-winning director Raju Murugan’s Japan, featuring actors Karthi and Anu Imannuel in the lead, is one of the most eagerly awaited films this Diwali 2023.

Scheduled to hit the screens on 10 November, Japan is actor Karthi’s 25th film as a hero and has therefore attracted huge attention.

Karthi plays a street-smart, dare-devil criminal named Japan in the film. A ₹200-crore heist forms the crux of the plot.

How Japan takes on a number of powerful and formidable foes and manages to outwit them is what the movie is all about.

Karthi’s dialogue delivery is being billed as a highlight of Japan.

The makers claim that until now, Karthi hasn’t delivered dialogues the way he has delivered in this film.

The flick will also feature director-cinematographer Vijay Milton, Telugu actor Sunil, and director KS Ravikumar in significant roles.

The music is by GV Prakash and the cinematography is by Ravi Varman.

Jigarthanda Double X

The fourth Tamil movie that is garnering a lot of attention is director Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda Double X, which features SJ Suryah and Raghava Lawrence in the lead.

The film has piqued the interest of fans and film buffs for the simple reason that its first part was immensely popular and hugely successful.

Jigarthanda Double X has also been in the news for the huge amount of money that went into its making — over ₹100 crore.

It has music by Santhosh Narayanan and is being produced by the director’s own production house — Stonebench Films.

Jigarthanda (2014) revolved around a debut filmmaker making a movie with a dreaded gangster in the lead.

Jigarthanda Double X, which is the second part of the franchise, also has a filmmaker and a gangster taking on each other. However, this time around, the story is set in 1975.

In an interview with South First, Karthik Subbaraj said, “I’ll call Jigarthanda Double X as the spiritual sequel of Jigarthanda. Jigarthanda’s soul lies in the fact that a gangster from the crime world meets an artiste (filmmaker) from the art world.”

He added, “The story is about how art changes both their lives. That core concept is there in this film too. Other than this soul, there is no other connection between the characters in this film and the characters of Jigarthanda’s first part.”

It is releasing in theatres on 10 November as a Diwali treat.
