The new poster of Basil Joseph’s next film, Ponman, features Sajin Gopu as a common man—a stark difference from his role in the latest blockbuster film Aavesham (2024) as a henchman.
Even as the poster raised curiosity among movie lovers about the project, it is believed that Sajin Gopu will play a comedy role in this Malayalam movie.
Ponman is an adaptation of GR Indugopan’s novel Nalanchu Cheruppakar. The movie is scripted by Indugopan and Minnal Murali (2021) co-writer Justin Mathew.
It is directed by Jothish Shankar. He entered the Malayalam film industry as an art director with Adaminte Makan Abu, released in 2011. He is also popular as a seasoned production designer.
Some of Jothish Shankar’s notable works as a production designer include Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017), Kumbalangi Nights (2019), and Virus (2019).
Ponman’s first-look poster was released earlier this week. It featured the lead actor Basil Joseph.
The movie also stars Lijomol Jose, Deepak Parambol, Anand Manmadhan, Rajesh Sharma, Jaya Kurup, Vyshnavi Kalyani, Lakshmy Sanju, Reju Sivadas, Maju Anchal, Shylaja P Ambu, K V Kadampanadan, Thankam Mohan, and Midhun Venugopal.
The cinematography is handled by Sanu John Varughese and the editing is by Nidhin Raj Arol. Justin Varghese is composing the music and background score for the film, while filmmaker Jothish Shankar is overseeing the production design.
Ponman is aiming for a release later this year and is produced by Ajith Vinayaka Films.
Sajin Gopu won huge accolades for his scintillating onscreen chemistry with Fahadh Faasil in Aavesham. The actor nailed it as Amban, the trusted henchman-buddy of Fahadh’s Ranga.
Aavesham grossed over ₹100 core at the global box office and topped the charts in the OTT space, too. While the Hindi version is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, the Malayalam and other dubbed versions are available on Amazon Prime Video.
Sajin Gopu is currently working on director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval’s Anyagraha Jeevikal, where he will be seen alongside Kunchacko Boban.
This apart, the Malayalam actor is all set to debut as the protagonist in his next. Sreejith Babu, who played key roles in Romancham (2023) and Aavesham, is debuting as a director with this movie.
The film casts Anaswara Rajan as the leading lady. Jithu Madhavan penned the script for the flick.
Meanwhile, Basil Joseph scored a hit with Nunakuzhi, which is running successfully in theatres. The film’s total box-office collection, by the end of day 8, has been put at ₹14.5 crore.
He is presently busy with Marana Mass (to be bankrolled by actor Tovino Thomas), Pravinkoodu Shappu with debutant Sreeraj Sreenivasan, and Sookshmadarshini under the direction of debutant MC Jithin.
