Kangana Ranaut Chandramukhi 2

Well-known Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who plays the iconic character of Chandramukhi in director P Vasu’s upcoming horror-thriller Chandramukhi 2, said she is not ruling out the possibility of entering politics at some later point in her life.

At a media interaction organised by the film’s unit in Chennai, the attention of the Bollywood actress was drawn to the fact that several heroines like Vijayshanthi, Kushboo, and Gauthami — who worked in director P Vasu’s earlier films — went on to enter politics and do well there as well.

When asked if she too would enter politics at some point in time, she said, “Honestly, I did not know that all these heroines became politicians. I didn’t notice this. But it is true. I am a very aware person and a responsible person.”

The Bollywood actor explained, “Most people think that I speak the way I speak or do what I do because I want to be in politics. But that is not true. I am just a desh bhakt (patriot). But there is no ulterior ambition in this.”

She further added, “I am happy with my life and with my career. I worked hard to be here. I  started working at the age of 16. So, starting another career and working for it from scratch seems such a tiring thing. But you never know what your destiny holds.”

Does that mean that she was not ruling out the possibility of entering politics at some later point if destiny willed it? “Yes, I am not ruling out the possibility of entering politics,” she replied.

In and as Chandramukhi

The actress, who plays Chandramukhi in Chandramukhi 2 — the second instalment of the immensely popular franchise Chandramukhi (2005), disclosed that she had not interacted with Jyothika who did the role in the 2005 release, but nevertheless considered the actress an icon.

She also revealed how she got the role. “I told Vasu sir that I wanted to play Chandramukhi. He had a different script for me. Though it was fine, I asked him if I could do Chandramukhi as well.”

The National Award-winning actress said, “I did not interact with Jyothika but I watched her interview where she was asked who her favourite actress was and she took my name. This was even before Chandramukhi and she is such an inspiration.”

“When I told Vasu sir that I wanted to do Chandramukhi, one of the reasons was because of seeing how she played the role. She will always be an iconic person for me,” Kangana Ranaut added.

Chandramukhi, which featured Superstar Rajinikanth, Jyothika, Prabhu and Nayanthara in the lead, went on to become a blockbuster.

‘A fan of Jyothika’

Several characters in the film are considered iconic. Under such circumstances, portraying the titular character could invite comparisons between her performance as Chandramukhi in part 2 and Jyothika’s performance as Chandramukhi in part 1.

“I don’t think I will have to face comparisons with Jyothika ji. I am a big fan of her myself. It is a big honour for me to even be in a film where she was performing and I think it is a landmark moment in my career. However, there is a difference between the characters we play,” Kangana felt.

While Jyothika and others played characters that were possessed by the spirit of Chandramukhi, Kangana clarified that she played Chandramukhi herself.

“While they all get possessed by Chandramukhi, I am Chandramukhi herself. My story is the story of Chandramukhi. How she was and why she became a ghost.”
