Teacher student bonds in Kannada films

Many actors portrayed the role of a teacher in Kannada films to this date, but only a handful are considered iconic.

While most of these projects showcase the special bond between the teacher and the student, some teacher-student sagas — more than just providing entertainment — end up teaching a lesson or two to the audience.

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, South First picks the top five such Kannada films that celebrate the bond between teacher and student on the silver screen.

School Master (1958)

Produced and directed by the legendary filmmaker BR Panthulu, School Master is the first Kannada movie that was remade in several languages.

Puttanna Kanagal, who is considered the finest director of the Kannada industry, made his debut by remaking the film in Malayalam as School Master in 1964.

But before it, the film was first remade in Hindi as School Master in 1959.

In Telugu, it was remade as Badi Pathulu in 1972, and as School Master in Tamil in 1973. It was even remade in Odia language, too.

Such is the legacy of this timeless classic that it became the first-ever Kannada film to celebrate a silver jubilee run at the box office.

In a nutshell, Ranganna is a government school headmaster who lives with his wife and three children. One of his sons gets into a fight with a ‘ruffian’ student named Vasu (Shivaji Ganeshan).

Still, Vasu is led to the path of righteousness by his kind-hearted teacher.

The film depicts petty politics, family emotions, and the bond between a teacher and a student.

Naagarahaavu (1972)

This classic film directed by Puttanna Kanagal starring Dr Vishnuvardhan, KS Aswath, Aarthi, and Dr Ambareesh is considered one of the top ten best Kannada films to date.

Of the several wonderfully written characters, Chamayya Meshtre and Ramachari (teacher and student respectively) won the hearts of the Kannada audience.

Shot mostly in Chitradurga, the film revolves around the titular role Ramachari, is an angry young man with a good heart.

Meanwhile, Chamayya is a school teacher with no kids of his own and treats Ramachari as his kid. Ramachari has only one weakness, and that is his anger.

Puttanna Kanagal presents the two characters with such good emotions that never fail to move the audience whenever they counter each other on various issues.

The climax scene involving the two is something to be watched and not described.

Guru Shishyaru (1981)

Directed by Bharaghava, Guru Shishyaru it is a comedy film which mainly revolves around seven disciples of a guru. The seven students are cursed by angels to behave like stupids.

It has a parallel story that runs between a prince and Gandharva Kanye (angel).

However, the film is known for its humour, portrayed by the best comedy actors of the time including Dwarakish.

The comedy sequences from the film are some of the most popular video clips on social media and television.

Care of Footpath (2009)

Directed by Kishan, who holds the record of the youngest person to direct a feature film, Care of Footpath revolves around an orphan boy who decides to get educated after some school children call him an uneducated brute.

Actress Thara plays Saraswati teacher and Kishan himself in the role of an orphan who gets adopted by an old lady who found him on the footpath.

School Teacher (2010) and Guru Shishyaru (2022)

The two other films with similar titles released in the past coincide with the teacher-and-student relationship.

Dr Vishnuvardhan-starrer School Teacher (2010), directed by Dinesh Babu is about Jagganath, a favourite teacher amongst his students. What happens when his daughter is kidnapped forms the rest of the story.

While 2022 released Guru Shishyaru starring Sharan is about a physical teacher who guides his students to the game of a kho-kho with loads of drama attached to it.
