CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke lost his paternal grandmother on the day Delhi Police detained him on his flight to the national capital.

Dipke was heading to Delhi on Saturday, October 10, to lead the protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and the scrapping of SIR.

News agency ANI reported that Delhi Police communicated the news of his grandmother’s demise to Dipke. “It is now up to him whether he wants to stay back and continue the protest under detention or fly back for the last rites,” Delhi Police sources reportedly said.

According to PTI, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke breathed her last at 11.30 am at the paternal house in Maharashtra’s Santuk Pimpri village. She had been ill for a month and was hospitalised in Hingoli earlier.

Her last rites will be performed at 10 am on Sunday, the sources said.

‘Something even Indira Gandhi had not done’

Earlier in the day, Delhi Police entered the plane in which Abhijeet Dipke was travelling and arrested him and his fellow CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka on arrival.

“How did you get into the flight?” Dipke asked the officers before heading off, raising slogans of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’.

“This is something not even Indira Gandhi had done. This is dictatorship when Delhi Police has entered the flight and is trying to arrest us,” Abhijeet Dipke said, as police detained him.

The detentions came on a day when the party had planned a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration amid heightened security arrangements across the national capital.

The national capital turned into Detention Central, and even journalists who were covering the protests were at the receiving end of the police’s heavy-handedness.
