The Union Government’s reasoning — from claiming it will cause complete havoc to it being against societal values — to vehemently opposing legal recognition of same-sex marriages has come under attack by activists.

The Supreme Court that was hearing a batch of petitions praying for equal rights, however, has transferred the matter to a Constitution bench which will hear it on 18 April.

The Supreme Court observed that it was of seminal importance and dealt with the rights of transgender couples.

On The Debate, Political Editor Anusha Ravi Sood speaks to equality rights activists and petitioners Harish Iyer and Akkai Padmashali.

They discuss the lack of the Union Government’s understanding of its reasoning, the implications, and the right under the Constitution to demand legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
