The body of the victim, identified as Juttu Shireesha, was found beside a pond located approximately 1 km away from her residence.

The police on Wednesday, 14 June, arrested the accused brother-in-law two days after the body of an 18-year-old nursing student was found in the Kadlapur village of the Parigi mandal in the Vikarabad district of Telangana.

Parigi Police Station Circle Inspector (CI) Venkatramaih told South First that E Anil Kumar was arrested on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, the National Commission For Women (NCW) wrote to Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar and demanded “a detailed action-taken report” within three days.

Brother-in-law arrested

As per the Pairigi CI, the accused Anil had been harassing the victim Shireesha for a year. She had apparently been avoiding his advances as he was married to her sister Lalitha.

On the day of the murder, when Shireesha left home on Wednesday night, Anil asked her once again to accept his proposal.

Upon her denial and a subsequent argument, Anil, who was already under the influence of alcohol, attacked Shireesha and killed her, said the police.

The CI also said that Anil threatened Shireesha’s partner six months ago to stay away from her.

Her brother Juttu Sreekanth told South First, “The police have arrested Anil. They said they have evidence against him.”

He added: “I only wish justice be served for my sister. If he is the culprit, he should be punished.”

The cops were also investigating the suicide angle. However, Sreekanth ruled out suicide.

Brutal murder

The victim, Shireesha, was a student of the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course at a local college and belonged to the Madiga community.

Following an altercation with her family members, she left her house on the night of Saturday, 10 June. The next day, her lifeless body was found in a pond around 1 km away from her house.

The FIR registered by the victim’s brother — which was accessed by South First — stated that his sister “was killed by some unknown persons last night and dumped in a water pond near the Gona Maisamma temple”.

Several major injuries were found on Shireesha’s body, including her eyes that were gouged out.

The FIR noted that there were also injuries on the lips, near the throat, the left ankle, the right heel, and the left wrist.

It added, that Shireesha and Sreekanth’s mother Yadamma was admitted to the NIMS Hospital on 30 May due to chest pain, and he had been with her in the hospital since then.

“Shireesha left her house on Saturday night (10 June) after a fight with my father, Jangaiah, and brother-in-law E Anil Kumar, who had beaten her for not cooking food,” Srikanth told South First earlier.

He was informed about this by his uncle Anjaiah the following day.
