The body of the victim, identified as Juttu Shireesha, was found beside a pond located approximately 1 km away from her residence.

A day after the body of an 18-year-old nursing student was found in the Kadlapur village of the Parigi mandal of the Vikarabad district of Telangana, the police on Monday, 12 June, said they were investigating whether it was a suicide or a murder.

The body of the victim, identified as Juttu Shireesha, was found beside a pond located approximately 1 km away from her residence.

The victim was a student of the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course at a local college, and belonged to the Madiga community.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women took note of the case and demanded appropriate action.

In a statement, the NCW said it had written to Director General of Police of Telangana to “arrest all the accused persons at the earliest”.

It also sought a time-bound investigation, and demanded “a detailed action-taken report” within three days.

Family rules out suicide

In the FIR registered by the victim’s brother Juttu Srikanth (24), he stated that his mother Yadamma was admitted to the NIMS Hospital on 30 May due to chest pain and he had been with her in the hospital since then.

“Shireesha left her house on Saturday night (10 June) after a fight with my father, Jangaiah, and brother-in-law E Anil Kumar, who had beaten her for not cooking food,” Srikanth told South First, adding that he was informed about this by his uncle Anjaiah the following day.

Despite a frantic search by the family members till late into the night, Shireesha was not found.

However, on the morning of Sunday, Srikanth’s uncle Anajaiah called again and asked him to come to a pond near their house, where Shireesha’s body was found.

“Generally, my father takes care of the house and household chores. However, he must have been tired that day and gone to sleep. So, my younger brother asked Shireesha to cook something, which she refused. While my father said they beat her, my brother-in-law said they scolded her,” Srikanth said.

When asked if they suspect suicide, he said, “I don’t think it is a suicide.”

‘Probing whether murder or homicide’

In the FIR, the cops stated several major injuries were found on Shireesha’s body, including her eyes having been gouged out.

The FIR noted that there were injuries on the lips, near the throat, the left ankle, the right heel, and the left wrist.

It added, “It seems that his sister (Shireesha) was killed by some unknown persons last night and dumped in
a water pond near the Gona Maisamma temple.”

The Circle Inspector (CI) of Parigi Mandal Police Station, Venkataramaiah, told South First that the cops were investigating the suicide and the homicide angles.

“The victim tried to end her life at home after her father and brother-in-law beat her. She subsequently locked the house from the outside and went elsewhere, where two eyewitnesses saw her. We are questioning the family members,” he said.

While several reports as well as Shireesha’s brother Srikanth claimed that the cops had detained her brother-in-law Anil for his alleged involvement in the murder, CI Venkataramaiah denied it to South First.

“We’ve known our brother-in-law for 10-11 years, I can’t say he did it. But if he did, he should be punished,” Srikanth said.

He also rubbished the news reports claiming that Shireesha was having an affair with her brother-in-law, and requested that such statements not be made in the absence of any proof.

“I don’t know how did they even write that. How can they write such things about a girl who is no more? She can never do such a thing,” he said about such news reports.
