Swiggy India report: 2.5 biryanis ordered per second in 2023; every 6th order from Hyderabad

Served with dahi chutney and mirchi ka salan, the Hyderabadi biryani is aromatic, delectable, and a gourmet’s delight.

However, one individual in Hyderabad seems to have developed an extraordinary craving for the dish. According to Swiggy, the person had ordered a staggering 1,633 servings — that is more than four a day — of the dish in 2023.

In its annual report, How India Swiggy’d in 2023, the food delivery platform also said Hyderabad ordered more biryanis than any other Indian city it has been serving.

The report reflected the nation’s food ordering habits.

Biryani paradise

The report highlighted that biryani dominated all orders for the eighth consecutive year. In 2023, India collectively ordered a remarkable 2.5 biryanis per second, with a ratio of 5.5 chicken biryanis to every vegetable biryani, if it could be called so.

It is not all. Among the new Swiggy users, 2.49 million people across the country debuted on the platform ordering biryani. The platform also recorded an astounding 40,30,827 searches for biryani.

The Swiggy report said: “Every sixth biryani order originated from Hyderabad”, underscoring the city’s deep-rooted connection with this culinary delight.

Notably, during the India vs Pakistan World Cup match in October, a biryani-loving family in Chandigarh placed an impressive order for 70 plates in one go.

Swiggy experienced a surge in demand and it processed over 250 biryani orders per minute during the match between the archrivals.

The idli person was not the one who spent the highest in 2023. A user in Mumbai shelled out ₹42.3 lakh for food ordered via Swiggy. The staggering amount is much higher than the annual salary of many Indians.

The culinary enthusiasm reached its zenith with user accounts in Chennai, Delhi, and Hyderabad, each boasting about placing more than 10,000 orders in a year.

The title of the grandest party host went to one from Jhansi, who ordered a whopping 269 items.
