KTR challenges CM Revanth Reddy to an open public debate
KTR challenged the Chief Minister to an open public debate on the Congress government's administrative failures, the plight of farmers, the ongoing agrarian crisis, and the overall governance of the state.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday, 1 July, strongly condemned Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s recent remarks describing Telangana as a “bankrupt state.”
KTR challenged the Chief Minister to an open public debate on the Congress government’s administrative failures, the plight of farmers, the ongoing agrarian crisis, and the overall governance of the state. He said he was prepared to participate in a debate anywhere in Telangana, at any time.
“If Revanth Reddy has the courage, let him decide the venue, time, and subject of the debate. I will be there,” KTR said. He further declared that if he failed to expose the failures of the Congress government with facts and evidence, he would resign on the spot and permanently retire from politics.
KTR also alleged that if Telangana is facing financial distress, it is solely because of the corruption and loot by the Chief Minister, his family members, ministers, and Congress leaders.
He said Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suffers from a poverty of thought and has consistently been tarnishing Telangana’s image. KTR remarked that no leader who truly cares for his state would publicly declare that it is bankrupt. He said no other Chief Minister in the country speaks so derogatorily about the very state he represents.
Referring to Revanth Reddy’s frequent visits to New Delhi, KTR questioned why the Chief Minister had travelled to Delhi 72 times in just 30 months despite repeatedly claiming that Telangana receives no respect there. He demanded that Revanth explain whom he was pleading with during those visits and asserted that if the Chief Minister was genuinely committed to Telangana, he should remain in the state for the next two-and-a-half years and focus entirely on governance.
KTR rejects allegations on state debt
Countering allegations regarding state debt, KTR said the Union Government itself had informed Parliament, in response to a question raised by BJP MP Raghunandan Rao, that Telangana’s outstanding debt stood at around ₹2.7 lakh crore.
Despite this, Revanth Reddy continues to make contradictory claims by citing figures of ₹6 lakh crore, ₹7 lakh crore, and even ₹8 lakh crore. He accused the Chief Minister of deliberately misrepresenting the state’s finances and interest payments to portray Telangana as bankrupt.
KTR said that if Telangana were ever to face bankruptcy, it would be because of the alleged corruption, looting, and financial mismanagement by Revanth Reddy, his family members, ministers, and Congress leaders. He accused the government of misleading the public through false financial narratives while depriving every section of society.
Quoting poet Dasarathi’s description of Telangana as the “Veena of a Crore Gems,” KTR said KCR transformed it into a land with a crore acres under cultivation. “Agricultural production, farmers’ incomes, and irrigation had more than doubled during the BRS government,” he said, making Revanth Reddy’s statements completely baseless.
Failed promises towards farmers
On the condition of farmers, KTR alleged that the Congress government had denied nearly ₹1.13 lakh crore worth of promised benefits. He accused the government of failing to implement Rythu Bandhu as promised, failing to deliver complete farm loan waivers, and neglecting tenant farmers and agricultural labourers despite election commitments. He said the government was celebrating while farmers continued to suffer.
Questioning the government, KTR asked when the pending dues of over ₹1.10 lakh crore owed to farmers would be cleared. He stated that Telangana’s farming community is experiencing one of its worst crises under Congress rule.
Highlighting the condition of agriculture, KTR said Telangana’s farmers are facing severe distress because of fertiliser shortages, crop failures, increasing farmer suicides, power cuts, and continuous protests across the state. Yet, according to him, the Chief Minister continues to project an unrealistic picture that everything is fine. He questioned whether the state government even has an effective intelligence system to accurately assess conditions on the ground.
KTR also questioned the government’s priorities, stating that there was no money for farmers, students, women, retired employees, or government employees, yet the Chief Minister was reportedly willing to allocate ₹1,000 crore to Rahul Gandhi, referring to a controversial statement of Revanth Reddy from February 2026. He said this contradiction had shocked the people of Telangana.
Responding to Revanth Reddy’s proposal for a discussion on governance, KTR reiterated his challenge. He said the debate could be held in Warangal, where the Congress announced its Farmers’ Declaration, or in Ashok Nagar, where promises of employment were made to the youth. He declared that he was prepared to debate any issue concerning farmers or any section of society.
KTR challenged Revanth Reddy to choose the topic, venue, and time, stating that he would arrive with official statistics and evidence. If he failed to expose the failures of the Congress government and the Chief Minister, he pledged to submit his resignation on the spot and permanently retire from politics.
KTR alleged that it has become a habit for Revanth Reddy to issue challenges and later withdraw from them. He recalled that Revanth had earlier promised to quit politics if BRS won both Kodangal and the GHMC elections but later backtracked on that commitment.
Comparison to BRS rule
KTR maintained that under KCR’s administration every major sector progressed steadily, whereas under the Congress government nearly every economic indicator has weakened. He cited declining state revenues, a slowdown in the real estate sector, falling vehicle registrations, and reduced GST collections as evidence of economic decline.
He remarked that the only “growth” under the present government was in liquor consumption and economic stagnation. If the Chief Minister was genuinely sincere, KTR challenged him to prohibit liquor sales in Telangana.
Concluding his remarks, KTR urged Revanth Reddy to stop making irresponsible statements that damage Telangana’s image, undermine public confidence, and hurt the self-respect of its people.
He asserted that the people of Telangana are closely watching the government’s performance and expressed confidence that they would deliver a decisive political verdict in the future. He further alleged that Revanth Reddy repeatedly targets KCR because he believes engaging with the former Chief Minister enhances his own political relevance and visibility.
