Food safety officials in Telangana have found rotten vegetables, fungal contamination, cockroach and housefly infestations, and improper food storage during inspections of 20 restaurants in Nalgonda, Suryapet and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts.
The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) suspended the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licences of seven of these establishments and directed them to stop operations immediately.
These included People Combine Hospitality LLP’s 7 Midway Plaza in Nalgonda, Ammachethi Vanta in Narketpally, Tanuja Hotels and Sri Mamatha Lodge and Restaurant in Suryapet, Sri Aadhya Grand Family Restaurant in Malkapur, AVR Group of Hotels’ Sangam Hotel in Choutuppal, and Highway Hospitality in Suryapet.
Hotel Sai Priya Family Restaurant in Nakrekal, Nalgonda district, was separately ordered to stop operations for functioning without an FSSAI licence under unhygienic conditions.
Officials found a damaged kitchen floor with stagnant water, unhygienic refrigerators, rotten vegetables, a foul smell in the kitchen and food handlers working without hairnets and aprons. The restaurant also lacked records relating to food handlers’ health and pest control.
The authority said the violations would invite further regulatory action under the applicable food safety requirements.
Improvement and show-cause notices
TG SAFE said improvement notices will be issued to eight other establishments to rectify the deficiencies found.
These included Little Village at Cheekatigudem, Vivera Hotel at Gopalayapalli and Dharasutha Foods at Peddakaparthy village in Nalgonda district; Hotel Sai Krishna and Sri Tirumala Grand in Suryapet; Hotel Vintage and Vintage Cafe at Cherlapally; People Combine Hospitality LLP’s 7 Midway Plaza in Suryapet; and Sangam Hotel at Malkapur in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

The inspections were conducted by 10 enforcement teams comprising food safety officers and police personnel as part of a special drive. Several of the establishments were located along National Highway 65, a key route connecting Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
According to a press note issued by TG SAFE, officials collected 20 food samples on suspicion of adulteration. The teams also found unhygienic kitchen conditions, damaged flooring, stagnant water, greasy exhaust systems and missing records relating to pest control and the health of food handlers.
