Synopsis: Multiple violations involving hygiene, sanitation and the storage of meat and other food articles were found at Hyderabad’s Shadab Hotel, the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) said. TG SAFE also said it found expired food items, improper storage practices and pest infestation at some establishments during a special drive covering 19 cafes and snack points.
Hyderabad’s iconic Shadab Hotel has been ordered to halt operations after the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) suspended its FSSAI licence following a food safety inspection that found “multiple violations” involving hygiene, sanitation and the storage of meat and other food articles.
In a press note dated September 2, TG SAFE said its enforcement teams had conducted a “special drive” targeting cafes and snack points across the Core Urban Region. Nine teams comprising Food Safety Officers and police personnel inspected 19 establishments.
Officials said the FSSAI licence of Shadab Hotel at Madina, Hyderabad, was “suspended” and the management was “instructed to stop the business operations immediately in the interest of public health”.
The action followed violations in the “maintenance of hygiene and sanitation and storage practices of meat and other food articles”, according to TG SAFE.
The inspection drive also found that some establishments were operating “without FSSAI licence/registration”. Officials reported hygiene problems in some preparation areas, including the “presence of open dustbins”, “littering of waste” and food handlers “not wearing headgear”.
Other violations included the “presence of expired food articles”, “violations in handling and storage of food articles”, “spoiled/expired food articles” and violations of the “FSS Labelling and Display Regulations”.
TG SAFE also reported “infestation of houseflies and cockroaches” at some establishments.
The authority said officials found a “lack of proper documentation” including FoSTaC training certificates, health records of food handlers and pest-control records.
Apart from Shadab Hotel, Dreamz Cafeteria in Bagh Lingampally and Asiatic Café in Panjagutta were closed after officials found that the establishments were operating “without valid FSSAI license/registration”.
During the inspections, food safety officials said “perishable” food articles that were “exposed to dust/flies” were discarded on the spot. Other food articles, including tea powder, ginger-garlic paste and biscuits that were “suspected to be adulterated” were seized and samples were sent for analysis.
A total of 15 samples were lifted “on suspicion of adulteration”, the authority said.
TG SAFE said “improvement notices” would be issued to Café Persia, Bahar Biryani Café, Café Deccan, Honeymoon Café, Rio Restaurant, Aromale Hospitality, Friends and Café, Diamond Point Hotel, Hotel Imroz, Blue Sea Tea and Snacks, Nimra Café and Bakery and Gulzar Foods (Persis Café).
The establishments will be “revisited to verify the status of compliance with the food safety norms”, following which “further action will be taken based on reinspection”, TG SAFE said.
The authority also said “Show Cause Notices” would be issued to Golden Café, Dreamz Cafeteria, Mirosa Café and Kitchen (Fyra Foods), Asiatic Café and Shadab Hotel for the violations reported during the inspections. Further action will be initiated “for imposing penalties”, it said.
The inspection drive covered 19 cafes and snack points across Hyderabad and Secunderabad, including Clock Tower Tea Cafe, Blue Sea Cafe, Mirosa Cafe, Dreamz Cafe, Diamond Point, Imroz Cafe, Adab, Cafe Persia, Friends Cafe, Golden Cafe, Persis, Honeymoon Cafe, Deccan Cafe, Nimrah Cafe, Shadab, Taiba Cafe, Irani Chai, Kaadhale and Rio Cafe.
