After being sworn in as a minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Special Act Implementation Department in the Tamil Nadu government, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Monday, 27 February.

At a time when Udhayanidhi is given prominence in the Cabinet, next to Chief Minister MK Stalin, the meeting with Modi gained significance and created various speculations in Tamil Nadu politics.

For the people of TN

Udhayanidhi, after meeting the prime minister told reporters that he requested an opportunity to host Khelo India events in the state and also told him about the projects undertaken by his department.

Udhayanidhi also explained to Modi the necessity for exempting NEET for Tamil Nadu students, for which the prime minister had given “a few explanations”.

Other discussions between Modi & Udhayanidhi

“I also explained to him the idea of constructing mini stadiums in all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state and the prime minister asked me about the feasibility of maintaining those stadiums. He also shared his experiences of building sports-related infrastructure as a chief minister,” Udhayanidhi said.

When asked whether he talked about the pending construction of AIIMS in Madurai, Udhayanidhi said that he hadn’t spoken about it.

Getting in his good books?

Denying that politics was spoken during the meeting, the DMK youth wing secretary said that the prime minister, while he is Chennai earlier, invited him to meet when he came to New Delhi.

Udhayanidhi also said that Modi had enquired about the good health of his father and chief minister Stalin.

Udhayanidhi was not accompanied by any senior leaders of the DMK and there are speculations that when Stalin moves abroad for treatment shortly, Udhayanidhi will be made deputy or placed in charge of the government.

Such proximity with the Union government will help him in handling the relationship with them.
