Praveen Chakravarty with CM Vijay. (X)
Synopsis: In a statement issued by the Tamil Nadu state executive committee of the CPI, state secretary M. Veerapandian said Praveen Chakravarty’s claim was “incorrect” and clarified that the CPI had neither been consulted nor approached regarding the formation of such an alliance or support for the Rajya Sabha candidate.
Left parties say they were neither consulted nor approached regarding alliance or Rajya Sabha candidature backed by TVK-Congress
Senior Congress leader Praveen Chakravarty, who was recently named as the Rajya Sabha candidate of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-Congress alliance for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu, has sparked controversy after referring to a broader “Tamil Nadu Social Justice Progressive Alliance” in a social media post.
In his post on X, Praveen Chakravarty said he considered it a matter of pride and responsibility to have been chosen as the “first MP candidate” of the “Tamil Nadu Social Justice Progressive Alliance”, which he listed as comprising TVK, Congress, VCK, IUML, CPI and CPM.
However, both the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] strongly objected to the claim and clarified that they were not part of any such alliance.
In a statement issued by the Tamil Nadu state executive committee of the CPI, state secretary M. Veerapandian said Praveen Chakravarty’s claim was “incorrect” and clarified that the CPI had neither been consulted nor approached regarding the formation of such an alliance or support for the Rajya Sabha candidate.
“The CPI has no knowledge of any ‘Tamil Nadu Social Justice Progressive Alliance’ mentioned by Praveen Chakravarty,” the statement said.
The party further explained that its support to the TVK government after the Assembly election was extended only to prevent the possibility of Governor’s Rule or what it described as an indirect BJP-backed administration in Tamil Nadu.
The CPI noted that the support was issue-based and should not be interpreted as participation in a formal political alliance with TVK and Congress.
CPM calls the post ‘overenthusiastic’
Similarly, CPM state secretary P. Shanmugam also rejected Praveen Chakravarty’s remarks.
In a statement, the Shanmugam said no one had approached or consulted the party either regarding the formation of such a coalition or extending support to the Rajya Sabha candidate.
He reiterated that it had already clearly explained the basis on which it extended support to the TVK government after the Assembly elections.
Referring to Praveen Chakravarty’s social media post, Shanmugam remarked that it could only be described as “overenthusiasm”.
தவெக ஆட்சி அமைக்க மார்க்சிஸ்ட்… pic.twitter.com/olwVCPo60R
