Synopsis: Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai met Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin, and B.L. Santhosh in Delhi on 2 June, submitting a letter signalling discontent. Sources say he may quit BJP, remain silent temporarily, and possibly launch a new party with Rajinikanth’s support in coming months.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai, who travelled to New Delhi yesterday, met BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior BJP functionary B.L. Santhosh on Tuesday, 2 June, amid intense political speculation over his future in the party.

According to sources familiar with the developments, Annamalai discussed the BJP’s performance in the last Assembly election, the reasons behind the party’s defeat, the present political situation in Tamil Nadu, and his own political activities. Sources also said he conveyed his dissatisfaction over certain recent developments within the party.

During the meetings, Annamalai is said to have submitted a letter to the BJP leadership. Though he reportedly did not explicitly announce any decision, sources claimed the letter conveyed that “there was no point in continuing under the present circumstances.”

Annamalai, who was initially expected to return to Chennai today, is learnt to have met Amit Shah after receiving a call from him. Sources close to Annamalai also confirmed that he had submitted a letter expressing his intention to step away from the party.

Plans to go low key

According to them, Annamalai is expected to remain politically silent for the time being. However, sources close to him claim that he may launch a new political party in the coming months. The sources also claimed that actor Rajinikanth is fully supportive of Annamalai’s political move.

Earlier, Delhi-based sources had told us, “There are reports that Annamalai may launch a party named ‘Tamilaga Makkal Sakthi Katchi’ (TMSK), but it is unclear whether the information is authentic.”

Political circles are also abuzz with speculation that Annamalai may initially launch a political movement rather than a full-fledged party. The proposed platform is expected to focus on a blend of nationalism and state-based politics, while also incorporating elements of Dravidian ideology and emphasising state rights.

There is also speculation that the movement could later be transformed into a political party. Annamalai, who quit as Karnataka cadre IPS officer, initially intended to join Rajanikanth when the superstar launched his political outfit. After Rajinikanth disbanded the idea of venturing into politics, Annamalai was brought to the BJP by the likes of party Organisational General Secretary BL Santhosh who nurtured him and gave him a free run in Tamil Nadu.
