Synopsis: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has adopted a resolution opposing the proposed Mekedatu dam, accusing the Congress government in Karnataka of violating the Cauvery Tribunal award and the Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment. The resolution, passed at a meeting of District Congress Committee presidents in Chennai, endorsed TNCC President P Manickam Tagore’s recent statement that not “even a single brick” would be allowed to be laid for the project.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) on Thursday adopted a resolution opposing the proposed Mekedatu dam, accusing the Congress government in Karnataka of pursuing the project in violation of the final Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and the Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment.

The resolution, passed at a meeting of District Congress Committee presidents in Chennai, endorsed TNCC President P Manickam Tagore’s recent statement that not “even a single brick” would be allowed to be laid for the project without Tamil Nadu’s consent.

The TNCC said it would continue to oppose the Mekedatu project and fight to protect the rights of Cauvery delta farmers in the State.

The meeting, held at Sathyamurthy Bhavan under the leadership of Tagore, was attended by Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister and Congress Legislature Party leader S Rajesh Kumar.

The meeting also adopted a series of resolutions expressing support for the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government and praising Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for “remarkable achievements” within two months of assuming office.

Party sets organisational, electoral goals

In the first of the resolutions adopted at the meeting, the district Congress leaders welcomed P Manickam Tagore’s appointment as President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the party’s organisational network at a time when Congress had returned to the Treasury benches in the State after nearly six decades, with two Ministers in the government.

The resolution also pledged Tamil Nadu’s support to Rahul Gandhi and said the party, under Tagore’s leadership, should translate that support into electoral gains by working towards winning all 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in the 2029 general election.

Another resolution praised Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s ideological clarity and commitment to secular politics. The resolution noted that although TVK required the support of 10 additional legislators to form the government and could have sought the backing of the AIADMK, it instead chose to form the government with what it described as secular allies, including the Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Left parties.

Praise for Vijay government

Another resolution credited the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led coalition government with delivering what it described as a “Tamil Nadu miracle” within less than two months of assuming office.

The resolution said the government had introduced several welfare measures despite inheriting a heavy debt burden from the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. It also alleged that the State had faced discrimination from the BJP-led Union government.

Among the initiatives cited were the provision of 200 units of free electricity, waiver of crop loans for small and marginal farmers, a special Kuruvai cultivation package, the extension of the breakfast scheme up to Class VIII, the launch of the Singa Pen women’s special task force, measures to curb drug abuse, and efforts to attract investments to the State.

Party leaders said the government’s performance reflected Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s leadership and added that he had the potential to emerge as an “unstoppable political force” in Tamil Nadu, drawing comparisons with former Chief Ministers K Kamaraj and MG Ramachandran.
