According to the police, murder-accused G Gokul was hacked to death by a gang of four near the district court complex in Coimbatore. His friend Manoj also sustained injuries in the attack.

The police said the deceased was accused of being involved in the murder of one Kurangu Sriram in December 2021, and that they suspected that his murder could have been the result of a rivalry.

City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan formed seven teams to nab the culprits.

While tracing the accused, the police found the mobile signals of one of them in at Kothagiri. They alerted the Nilgiris district police.

Based on the tip-off, the Niligiri police secured five people — Joshuva Devapriyan, Gowtham, Arun Kumar, Bharani, and Hari — while they were travelling on four bikes.

Meanwhile, a team reached rushed to Kothagiri, and the accused were handed over to the Coimbatore city police.

On Tuesday evening, City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan told reporters that seven accused had been arrested in connection with the crime.

Thereafter he revealed that while the detained accused were being transported back to Coimbatore, two of them — Joshuva Devapriyan and Gowtham — tried to escape from the police clutches, while the vehicle was nearing Mettupalayam.

The police shot two of them in the leg and thereafter took them to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital for first aid.

Later, the duo was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

The commissioner stated that there was no room for anti-social elements who disturbed the peace of the city and trouble the public.

All seven accused were produced before a judicial magistrate and were remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the injured will be treated at the hospital.
