The incident happened near the back entrance of the court campus when the victim was on his way to appear in court in a murder case.

According to police, the victim was accompanied by his friend Manoj.

Around 11.40 am, the duo was standing in a tea shop located on the second street in the Gopalapuram area behind the combined court complex.

A gang of four masked men approached them and started hacking away at Gokul and Manoj.

Gokul sustained a sharp cut on his neck and succumbed to the injuries on the spot.

While Manoj was trying to escape, the gang chased him to the next street and hacked at him. Sustaining severe injuries, Manoj fell on the street, seeking help.

The whole incident was video-recorded by the residents in the street and the gang seemed to leave the place casually.

The area in which the murder took place is around 500 metres away from the police commissioner’s and district collector’s offices, and the gang was said to have escaped through that route.

The police take action

Upon being informed about the arrest, the police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of Gokul, and sent it for an autopsy at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

Manoj, who sustained grievous injuries, was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the deceased was accused of being involved in the murder of one Kurangu Sriram in December 2021, and the police suspected that his murder could have been the result of a rivalry.

Gokul was arrested in the case and later let off on bail.

As he failed to comply with the conditions imposed during the bail, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.

Hence, Gokul came to Court on Monday to surrender himself in the case.

Five special teams have been formed to arrest the assailants.
