Congress failed to recreate its assembly poll magic in Karnataka as it settled for nine seats. BJP won 17 seats — 8 less than their 2019 tally

Despite an alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had to settle for just 17 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The performance pales in comparison with its stellar performance in the 2019 parliament elections.
On the other hand, Congress, that registered a landslide victory in the assembly polls last year, failed to recreate the magic in Karnataka and was limited to nine seats in the general elections.
JD(S), alliance partner of the BJP-led-National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has managed to win two of three seats — Mandya and Kolar — it contested in Karnataka.
Among the six ministers’ kin, who contested on the Congress ticket in Karnataka, three have emerged victorious, and three have lost in the parliament elections. When it comes to relatives, three have won and one has lost.
In Hassan Lok Sabha seat, which garnered significant attention after the videos of sexual abuse by incumbent MP Prajwal Revanna went viral a day before the polling, Congress managed to breach the JD(S) stronghold and defeated Prajwal.
Meanwhile, three former chief ministers, who contested the Lok Sabha elections on NDA tickets, have managed to win in the parliament elections.
Despite the alliance with the regional party JD(S) in the state, the BJP underperformed in the Lok Sabha elections compared to its overwhelming campaign in the 2019 parliament elections.
It may be noted that BJP, who contested independently, sprung a surprise by winning a record 25 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 elections. JD(S) had joined hands with the Congress in the previous parliament elections.
After making an alliance with the JD(S) this time, the BJP contested in 25 seats and gave three seats to the regional party.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP managed to win only 17 seats, which is eight seats less than the 2019 elections. Its alliance partner JD(S) has won two of three seats it contested. With this, the NDA alliance has settled for the 19 parliament seats.
Former Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and Jagadish Shettar, who returned to the BJP ahead of the parliament elections, won from the Haveri-Gadag and Belagavi parliament seats, respectively.
Incumbent Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Shobha Karandlaje won from the Dharwad and Bangalore North seats, respectively, However, another incumbent Union Minister Bhagwanth Khuba lost from the Bidar seat.
Senior leaders incumbent MP Ramesh Jigajinagi from Bijapur (SC), former Deputy CM Govind Karjol from Chitradurga (SC), former minister V Somanna, former minister and MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary from Udupi Chikkamagalur, incumbent MP PC Mohan from Bangalore Central, incumbent MP PC Gaddigoudar from Bagalkot, and former MLA Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri from Uttar Kannada had a smooth win.
BJP Yuva Morch (BJYM) chief and incumbent MP Tejasvi Surya from the Bangalore South and incumbent MP BY Raghavendra from Shimoga managed to retain their seats.
Erstwhile Mysore Royal scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar from Mysore, and Capt Brijesh Chowta from Dakshina Kannada, Cardiologist Dr CN Manjunath from Bangalore Rural, and former minister Dr K Sudhakar from the Chikkaballapur seat tasted success in their maiden parliament election.
Incumbent MPs Annasaheb Jolle from Chikkodi, Umesh Jadhav from Gulbarga (SC) and Raja Amareshwar Naik from Raichur (ST) failed to retain their seats.
The BJP candidates former Deputy CM B Sriramulu, Balraj S and Gayithri Siddeshwara also failed to secure their seats in Bellary (ST), Chamarajanagar (SC), and Davanagere respectively.
BJP-led-NDA alliance partner JD(S) has managed to win two of three seats. However, sexual violence accused-Prajwal Revanna, who is currently under Special Investigation Team (SIT) custody, lost the parliament elections.
JD(S) state chief and former CM HD Kumaraswamy won by a record margin of 2,84,620 votes from the Mandya Lok Sabha seat. In Kolar (SC), JD(S) candidate M Mallesh Babu won by a margin of 71,388 votes.
Nearly after 20 years, the Congress has managed to breach the stronghold of the JD(S) in Hassan. This seat was represented by the JD(S) since 2004.
In Karnataka, the Hassan parliament seat had attracted lot of attention as just a day before the polling, thousands of videos of sexual abuse by Prajwal Revanna went viral.
He was booked with the charges of sexual violence and kidnapping after the victims registered a complaint against him. Upon his arrival from Germany, Revanna was arrested by the SIT on 31 May.
Congress’ Shreyas Patel defeated Prajwal by a margin of 42,649 votes from the Hassan seat.
Congress betters its numbers, but failed to overpower the BJP in Karnataka
Despite Congress’ landslide victory in the 2023 Karnataka assembly polls, the grand old party failed in its effort to maintain the same charisma in the 2024 parliament elections.
In a relief to the party in this general election, it has bettered its numbers when compared to the 2019 parliament elections. Congress, which is the ruling party in Karnataka, has managed to increase its strength to nine seats in the parliament.
The Lok Sabha poll results have clearly proved that Congress government in Karnataka failed to turn the guarantee scheme beneficiaries into votes as the grand-old-party lost in 19 parliament seats.
The Congress high command had fielded children of the six state cabinet ministers in the parliament polls. Among them, three have won and three have lost.
Minister for Forest Eshwar Khandre’s son Sagar Khandre won from the Bidar Lok Sabha seat, Minister for Social Welfare Dr HC Mahadevappa’s son Sunil Bose secured the Chamarajanagar (SC) seat and Minister for Public Works Satish Jarkiholi’s daughter Priyank Jarkiholi emerged victorious from the Chikkodi Lok Sabha seat.
Minister for Transport Ramalinga Reddy’s daughter and former MLA Sowmya Reddy lost from Bangalore South, while Minister for Sugars and Textiles Shivananda Patil’s daughter Samyutha Patil failed to secure a seat from Bagalkot.
Mrunal Hebbalkar, Minister for Women and Child Welfare, lost the battle from Belagavi.
In a relief to All India Congress Committee (AICC), chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani won comfortably against the BJP’s Umesh Jadhava from the Gulbarga (SC) seat. In the previous election, Kharge tasted his first defeat.
Minister for Mines and Geology SS Mallikarjun’s wife Dr Prabha Mallikarjun from Davanagere and MLA Raghavendra Hitnal’s brother Rajashekar Hitnal from Koppal have defeated the respective BJP candidates and emerged victorious.
Four-time Sandur MLA E Tukaram and Shreyas Patel won comfortably from Bellary (ST) and Hassan, respectively. However, Bangalore Rural incumbent MP DK Suresh, who was the lone leader to win in 2019, failed to secure his seat.
Former MLA Raju Alagur lost from Bijapur (SC) and Geetha Shivarajkumar lost from Shimoga. Former MP Jayaprakash Hegde lost from Udupi Chikkamagaluru, while KPCC Working President BN Chandrappa lost from Chitradurga.
Muddahanumegowda, former MP, lost from Tumkur.
Former Rajya Sabha member Professor Rajeev Gowda and AICC member Mansoor Ali Khan lost the elections from Bangalore North and Bangalore Central respectively.
Padmaraj from Dakshina Kannada, former MLA Dr Anjali Nimbalkar from Uttar Kannada, Vinod Asooti from Dharwad, Annadaswamy Gaddadevaramath from Haveri also failed to secure their seats.
Venkatramane Gowda and KV Gowtham also lost from the Mandya and Kolar (SC) seats, respectively.
Despite being at the helm, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC chief and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar failed to ensure the victory of its party candidates on their home turfs.
BJP’s nominee and erstwhile Mysore Royal scion Yaduveer KC Wadiyar defeated Congress’ M Lakshman by a whopping margin of 1,39,262 votes in the Mysore parliament seat.
After Congress had come to power in 2023 in the state, Siddaramaiah was appointed as the Chief Minister for the second term. The grand-old-party was confident of winning the parliament elections from the Mysore seat.
However, it suffered a failure despite having five of the eight MLAs from the grand-old-party.
In spite of Bangalore Rural being the home turf of Deputy CM Shivakumnar and five of the eight MLAs from Congress, incumbent MP DK Suresh, who was representing the seat since 2013, lost the elections.
DK Suresh was defeated by BJP’s Dr CN Manjunath, who made his debut in the electoral politics, with a stellar margin of 2,69,647 votes. This result has taken several people by surprise not only in Bangalore but also across the state.
