Kerala Police have booked social media influencer Amrit Singh Darren for allegedly promoting religious hatred and communal discord after he claimed Fort Kochi was “full of Muslims” and that Kashi Art Cafe indulged in an “unholy” act by serving beef in an Instagram video. The video, posted on Singh’s Instagram page Iittichokha_up, went viral and invited widespread condemnation.
The Fort Kochi police registered the case on a complaint filed by Jude Vipin, a resident of Amaravathi in Fort Kochi. The case was booked under Sections 353(2) and 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with promoting enmity between groups and provocation with the intent or likelihood of causing a riot.
The complaint alleged the remarks were intended to provoke reactions on social media and promote enmity between two religious communities. It also alleged that the video was circulated despite the likelihood of disturbing communal harmony and triggering unrest.
The Youth League’s Ernakulam district committee president, KA Shuhaib, had earlier approached the Kochi City Police Commissioner, seeking action against Singh. The complaint said his remarks could spread misconceptions about Fort Kochi and undermine the peaceful coexistence of its diverse communities.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan condemned the video in a post on X, saying communal hatred had no place in Keralam.
“Keralam stands united. No room for hate. We will not allow anyone to even lay a finger on our communal harmony,” Singh Satheesan said.
