Synopsis: Following the Delhi summit, the scene will shift back to Kerala for subsequent meetings. Crucially, party sources indicate that the opinions of key United Democratic Front (UDF)constituents—most notably the IUML—will be factored into the final consensus. As the high command weighs “seniority” against “new-age leadership,” Kerala waits to see who will emerge from the huddle to lead the state into its next chapter.

Fresh off a resounding victory in the Kerala Assembly polls, the Congress state unit has officially set the wheels in motion to resolve the contentious debate over who will lead the next government.

The battle for the Chief Minister’s post has intensified, with three prominent names emerging as the frontrunners in a race that balances seniority, performance, and organizational clout.

The leadership discussion currently centers on a high-profile trio:

  • VD Satheesan: The MLA designate and former Opposition Leader, who maintains that the “party will decide” the final outcome.
  • Ramesh Chennithala: A veteran MLA designate and senior leader who has indirectly signalled that his long-standing service and seniority should be a consideration
  • KC Venugopal: The Alappuzha MP whose potential candidacy has stirred the most debate within the state unit.

The first round of critical talks, as per party sources, is scheduled for this afternoon at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

The meeting is expected to be attended by leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, key AICC officials, and senior leaders from Kerala.

Agenda of the meeting

The agenda, it’s said, is twofold:

  • Post-election analysis: A deep dive into the victory margins and regional performance.
  • Leadership selection: Shortlisting the CM probables and appointing AICC observers to travel to Kerala to gauge the pulse of the newly elected MLA designates.

However, the road to the CM’s office is not without hurdles. Internal friction has surfaced regarding KC Venugopal’s dual role.

While he is attending the Delhi meeting in his official capacity as AICC general secretary (organization), some state leaders have questioned the propriety of his presence, alleging he is actively “pulling the strings” for his own candidacy. The decision won’t be made in a vacuum, leaders expect.

IUML opinion critical

Following the Delhi summit, the scene will shift back to Kerala for subsequent meetings.

Crucially, party sources indicate that the opinions of key United Democratic Front (UDF)constituents—most notably the
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)—will be factored into the final consensus.

As the high command weighs “seniority” against “new-age leadership,” Kerala waits to see who will emerge from the huddle to lead the state into its next chapter.
